World War One grew out of tension between Europe's great powers, which peaked when Britain and Germany went to war in August 1914. Because Australia was a dominion of the British Empire, it meant we were at war too. Australians were enthusiastic and quickly signed up to join our new volunteer army, the Australian Imperial Force (AFI). Eventually 330,000 Australians left to fight overseas. Huge crowds turned out to farewell the first contingents a of soldiers to leave. Australian troops fought on Gallipoli, the Western Front (France and Belgium) and in Sinai and Palestine in the Middle East. The majority of Australians who died in WW1 were killed Western Front. Australians also served in the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Flying Corps and the medics and nurses.
The war ended when Germany signed the Armistice on November 11, 1918. In total, more than 60,000 Australians were killed in the war and 156,000 were wounded, gassed or captured.
