Australian pilots faced danger in the skies over the Western Front on a daily basis. Single-seater aircraft fought enemy fighter planes over German territory. Twin-seater aircraft carried out photographic and reconnaissance missions. It was a terrifying prospect for these young airmen who had received just enough training to send then into battle. Life expectancy was short. Lieutenant Owen Lewis was just 22 when he arrived as a raw recruit on the Western Front. Flying as an observer with an experienced pilot, in just six days the pair had been in five aerial combats and their plane had been badly shot up twice. Lewis survived serious injuries before he was killed on April 12, 1918, when his aircraft burst into flames on take-off.
