After the landing on Gallipoli, Australians were eager to do whatever they could for the "war effort". Many women joined organizations and knited socks, vests, mittens and even sewed pyjamas and shirts. One young women, Rita Duffy, decided she would write personal letters to the 70 Australians taken prisoner on Gallipoli. Incredibly, her first arriver at the prisoner-of-camp in Turkey after just eight weeks. She dutifully exchanged letters with the prisoners until the war ended. With so many men away fighting, women had to manage children, family and finances alone, bit thousands actively joined organisations like Red Cross, The Country Women's Association and the Women's National League.
