The Last Post was originally part of an elaborate nightly routine used by the British Army in the 17th century to check sentry and round up off-duty soldiers. An officer would carry out the rounds accompanied by musicians.
The First Post was played at the start of the round, then as the officer moved from post to post, drumbeats told soldiers it was time to rest.
When the officer had finished his rounds, the Last Post was played, which was a final warning to soldiers and instructed night sentries to be on alert.
