LIGHT HORSEMEN

The Australian Light Horse became legendary during WW1. In October 1917, the 4th Light Horse Brigade made a famous cavalry charge to capture the strategically important Palestinian town of Beersheba and secure a water supply. If they failed, the men and horses of Light Horse risked death from dehydration. At dusk on October 31, 300 light horsemen moved into formation before moving off torwards the Turkish positions. They were soon galloping towards the Turkish machine-guns, which opened fore as soon as the charge started. Yelling at the top of their lungs and brandishing their beyonets as swords, many light horsemen leptt over the Turkish trenches before capturing the mechine-guns. Against all the odds, Beersheba was taken in less then an hour. In this great charge, 31 men and 70 horses were killed
