In World War One, Australian nurses served in countries ranging from Egypt and India, to France, Belguim, Greece and Salonkia (Macedonia). Many worked close to the front lines in casualty clearing stations, exposed to shellfire and bombing and at war's end eight nurses had won the Military Medal for bravery. By the end of 1914 some 3,000 Australian nurses were serving in Egypt where they confronted the mounting toll of the Galliopli campaign. "It is all too dreadful," wrote Sister Alice Kitchen. "Every day we hear of someone we knew being killed or wounded." At the island of Lemnos, the 3rd Australian General Hospital was run by Matron Grace Wilson who led 96 nurses from the Australian Army Nurses Service
