The submarines AE1 and AE2 were both lost during the early chapters of WW1 in the earliest days of effective submarine warfare.

At the outbreak of war both submarines were sent to German New Guinea to help capture the German colony, but on her return journey AE1 was lost and has never been found. AE2 was despatched to the Dardanelles where it's captain, Lieutenant Commander Henry Stoker, was ordered to disrupt Turkish shipping. For days the submarine played cat and mouse with Turkish guns and ships before Lt Cdr Stoker ordered his badly damager boat to be scuttled. Her crew was captured and spent more than three years as prisoners of war. The submarine still remains at the bottom of the sea of Marmara off coast of Turkey.
