The AFI was one of the youngest armies from one of the youngest countries (Australia's Federation had occurred just 13 years before), but it fought on some of the oldest battlefields in the the world, where it proved itself a world a world-class army. Australian soldiers trained in the ancient city of Cairo, fought in Turkey, entered Jerusalem and Damascus - two of mankind's most historic cities - and helped to defeat the German Army on the Western Front. They also endured life in the trenches. Waterlogged and muddy, these were infested with rats and lice, exposed to the elements and fostered disease. You had to be tough - and lucky - to survive.
