Road Trip

We drove through the middle of nowhere for hours. Just suburbs, and run down gas stations and something called a "happy mart" which looked more depressing than anything so far.
Me and Agatha barely talked, and when we did it was mostly fighting over stupid things like the radio or air conditioning.
Senior scratchy who'd apparently come along for the ride took the liberty of chewing through his cadge and ended up on my lap. Although I didn't mind, things got a bit tense once Agatha told me he was actually a demon. She was probably just saying that to scare me though I was sure.
After about four hours I broke the silence.
"I'm starving." I said, as my stomach rumbled.
"Ugh, can't it wait?" Agatha asked.
"No." I said blankly, "I haven't eaten in two years remember."
Agatha blew out a long and frustrated sigh and muttered something along the lines of "I hate children," under her breath.
"Fine we'll stop at McDonald's."
"What's that?" I asked, completely oblivious.
The witch just shook her head like I was an idiot.
"How old are you supposed to be again?" She asked.
I shrugged, "I dunno, fourteen, maybe fifteen ."
"Well you sure don't act your age." She remarked nastily.

I rolled my eyes as we drove into the McDonald's drive through.
"Seriously?" Agatha yelled smashing her first on the dashboard, "this place always has the longest fucking line ups!"
"Has anyone ever told you your a bit dramatic?" I asked snarkly.
"Anyone ever told you your a brat!" Agatha spat back.
I frowned.
"What do you want?" Agatha grumbled as we drove up to the ordering window.
I just shrugged.
"Ugh fine your eating a happy meal."
I nearly laughed out loud.
"I'm sorry a what, that's a ridiculous name."
"It's fast food, what did you except?" She retorted.
She shushed me as we drove up to the speaker.
"Hello, how may I help you." The speaker said sounding ridiculously happy.
"Hi yes," Agnes said dawning her fake nice person voice, "I'll have two happy meals and a chocolate milk shake."
"Our milkshake machine is actually out of order." The speaker replied.
"Seriously!" Agatha yelled breaking her kind act, "god damn it, fine a coke then."
"We don't have coke, I'm sorry ma'am."
Agnes turned to me with a livid expression.
"Fine then. Just two happy meals." She snarled before spreading up to the window.

Without paying she snatched the food before flicking her wrist and throwing the waiter a half mile backwards.
She then honked and speed off angrily thrusting the bag of food into my lap.
"You coulda at least payed the guy." I muttered.
"Shut up and eat your meal." She said.
I fell silent and begrudgingly ate my "happy meal" which actually wasn't all that bad.

After Agatha stole all my fries and complained a sufficient amount about the incompetence of the McDonald's workers we finally settled down.
I didn't feel like arguing with her anymore, and I just wanted to sleep. I mean my whole body felt like rubber, I guessed that's what being dead does to someone.
Resting my head on the side of the dashboard I eventually fell into a restless sleep, only to be jerked awake an hour later.
"Well you've had quiet the sleep." Agatha said although I hadn't been out long.
"Sweet dreams?" She jeered with a mocking smirk.
I worked my jaw and choose to ignore her taunting.
"Oh common, your no fun." She said elbowing me slightly.
I flinched away subconsciously.

While driving Agatha played with the brooch on her collar, rubbing her fingers over the smooth surface.
"What is that?" I asked, "your broach I mean."
"It belonged to my mother." She said eyeing me suspiciously.
"Why do you ask?"
"No reason, just curious. You fidget with it a lot."
"I never noticed." She replied somewhat self consciously.
"Is your mother still..."
"She's dead." Agatha interjected, "I killed her, along with the rest of my coven."
My eyes grew wide as my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach.
"All of them?" I gasped.
"They had it coming." She growled, "and it wasn't a long death." She added with a smirk.
I gulped and edged away from her, "what did they do to you?" I asked in a terrified whisper.
Agatha was silent for a moment before speaking once more.
"My mother ordered for me to be killed, they feared my power, so I took all of theres."

Something about the empty hollowness of her words sent me shivering. And I swear the car got cooler.
"Your own mother...tried to kill you?" The words left my mouth like a whisper.
"Of course she did," Agnes scoffed, "I held more power than our whole coven combined and she knew it. Spells bent to my will and even my kindest intentions came out in dark magic. She wanted to remain the one in power."
I studied Agatha's face for a moment.
"How could anyone every do that to their own daughter?" I muttered and then, "I'm sorry Agatha, I - I didn't know."
She gave me an odd glance, "well of course you didn't know, no one does."
"Why not?"
"Because..." she snarled, "just...because."
"Is that part of the reason you want my mothers power, for some kind of revenge, because if that's your form of twisted logic then wouldn't the best revenge be proving your mother wrong? You know, showing her that you actually can be good."
"I have no interest in proving something to a dead woman." Agatha snapped.
"Then let her go." I advised, "Maybe then you won't crave such unnecessary power."
Agatha fell silent for a second, as though she were really taking into account some of what I'd said.
"Why do you want me to teach you magic?" She asked out of nowhere.
"I told you already, I want to learn so I can protect myself and my family."
"That's a lie," Agatha spat, "what's the real reason?"
"That is the real reason!" I demanded.
"It is not!" She said back, "and until your ready to be honest with me and yourself I'm not going to be teachyou anything."
"Wait, does that mean you'll teach me?"
"Not if you don't tell me the real reason you want to learn, and not that bullshit you've been telling yourself.•"
"It's not bullshit." I grumbled under my breath, turning away to face the window.
Agatha scoffed and chose to ignore me, despite my anger though I knew she was right. I just couldn't understand what I really wanted, not yet at least.
But when I did...I'd be ready.
