Tony's POV
Steve, Marjorie, and Clint should be headed your way, Nat's voice whispered in his ear. The coms were a good call.
"Should I engage?" Tony whispered, hoping his hushed voice, the shut door, and his hand would be enough to prevent Steve hearing with his supersoilder senses.
Yes. But stick to the plan.
Nat had told them the plan (with a few of Tony's own ideas) over the coms, and they all knew their individual parts.
"I'm not sure how I feel about this part," Tony confided. "Are you sure it will work?"
Definitely, Sam's voice said. Are you doubting your natural charm?
"No way, Wilson. There's a reason people call me 'The Hottest Avenger.'"
That is NOT what people call you, Bruce argued.
"Uh, yeah it is. But still."
For some reason, the plan was for Tony to distract steve by flirting with him while Nat gave Sam the flag.
Or what they would think is the flag.
Tony doubted this would work, but everyone else on his team was convinced that it would.
Tony had always assumed Steve was straight. Not that liking guys was a bad thing, personally Tony was pansexual. He just assumed, because of the 40s thing.
But gay or not gay aside, Steve was too smart to be distracted by Tony's flirting, no matter how attractive Tony was.
There is no way this is going to work.
Steve will see right through me.
But he might as well put all his effort in.
This is humiliating.
He sees me as a friend.
I see him as a friend.
...Right?
...Do I see him as a friend?
It didn't matter. Even if Tony wanted Steve to like him and want to be with him, it didn't matter if Steve didn't feel the same way. And Tony wasn't going to let a tiny crush get in the way of doing his job—both at Stark Industries and as Iron Man.
This was the plan, and Tony would stick to it.
Maybe it won't be so bad.
After all, Steve was adorable, and Tony was single.
