trigger warning: dark themes that may be offensive or upsetting to some readers
Marjorie's POV
She teleported to Bucky's shadow vapor.
They had agreed on this earlier, so he wasn't surprised when Marjorie appeared in his shadow.
"Hey, doll," he muttered as he pulled Marjorie against his chest, and traced his fingers down the side of her face.
Marjorie was 110% sure she was blushing, and was glad that they were in a dark room.
"Do you know how Clint is going to get here?" Bucky asked in the same seductive purr.
Marjorie was pretty sure that he was not aware of the effect he had on her.
"Umm, no... Nat didn't say," she said. Marjorie furiously tried to reorder her thoughts.
They were on the roof of a suspicious building, the sky a midnight blue, clouds covering the stars. That was a big city's trademark; too much air pollution in the sky to see the stars.
"Are they in this building?" asked Marjorie.
"Yes, I think so."
Marjorie reached out with her shadow vapor. The plan was that if Marjorie sensed any sign of distress, Bucky and her would extract them. Clint too, if he ever showed up.
"They seem fine," she told him.
"I guess we wait, then."
Marjorie was hyper-aware of how she was still pressed against him, and wondered if she could simultaneously watch Nat and Sam's shadow vapor while kissing her boyfriend. She pondered this for a moment.
Nat probably had it under control.
And Bucky had wrapped his arms around her waist, which probably didn't help the situation.
He seemed content to just hold her through; he always did. Bucky was always picking her up and hugging her, like she was a stuffed animal.
Marjorie loved it.
"Hey, Marjorie," Bucky said suddenly. He sounded alert and wary. "Did you hear that?"
"No? Wh—"
Marjorie heard a muffled crashing noise from the building. The shadow vapor was very distressed. "That's not good," she mumbled.
She stepped away from Bucky and walked to the entrance to the top floor. "Shall we?"
"Please stay behind me," Bucky instructed.
"Okay." Like she would let him put himself between danger and her.
Marjorie stepped in the shadows, pulling them around her so she was mostly invisible.
Bucky was holding the door open uncertainty. "Are you—"
"Yep," said Marjorie from within the door.
Marjorie followed Bucky invisibly down the hall. He looked ready to shoot and kill someone, and it was probably the most beautiful thing Marjorie had ever seen.
Bucky's eyes were blazing, and Marjorie walked headfirst into a wall because she was so busy trying to determine whether they were a cobalt or lapis.
She snuck ahead of Bucky and found stairs. Marjorie could track Nat and Sam, so she would find them while Bucky distracted everyone by beating them up and being hot.
The second floor down was just as empty as the first. It made Marjorie uneasy.
But Nat and Sam were still farther down, so she went down another floor. This felt like the right floor, she just needed to go more forward and left.
This was definitely the right floor, Marjorie could hear crashes and screams slowly increasing in volume as she got closer. She had to carefully step over the occasional unconscious/injured guard, and was careful not to wake them up.
Luckily the door for the room was propped open, so Marjorie could enter undetected.
The room was a wide, unfurnitured, room with white walls. Nat and Sam were fighting about 20 guards at once, and were back to back in the middle of the space. There was also a woman who looked in charge watching from the front of the room, accompanied by two additional guards.
This woman was a tallish 30-some white with dark, medium length wavy hair. She looked very uptight and professional.
Marjorie, realizing that this woman must be in charge, made her way over to her.
She was then faced with a dilemma. If Marjorie were to subdue the guards and the woman, she would have to concentrate on that and not concealing herself with shadows.
So they would see her.
So be it.
Marjorie let the shadows move back into their natural spots, and kicked one guard where it really hurt, (apparently, anyway. Marjorie was cis, so she didn't really know) leaving him incapacitated on the ground.
The woman and the remaining guard stared at her in shock.
Marjorie quickly pulled up her hand and a spike of their own shadow impaled the remaining guard, and then shrunk back into its original shape. Marjorie didn't particularly care if he bled out or not, so she left the remaining guard on the floor.
She redirected her attention toward the woman; the next immediate hostile.
Marjorie had lost the element of surprise. The woman tried to punch her and Marjorie quickly ducked. Marjorie spun around in a high kick that the woman blocked with her forearm—though not without some pain.
Then Marjorie made a mistake that she would curse forever.
"Marjorie!" explained Nat. Marjorie's head swiveled to Nat across the room. "Get away from—"
Marjorie felt a small prick of pain in her neck.
She had taken her eyes off her enemy.
The light in the room faded and Marjorie fell, not even keeping her eyes open enough to see herself hit the floor.
