Going in for my weekly appointment, my blood pressure was high so Dr. Benton decided to admit me into the hospital. He said if he had to take the babies, they would be good because I was past the eighth month mark. It was March of 2023 and Chris and I were almost at our one year mark. If you would've told me a year ago that I would be married to Chris Howorth and pregnant with twins, I would've laughed in your face. Yet, here I was.
They had the monitor wrapped around my huge belly and we could hear their heartbeats. They were extremely strong. They were good. I, on the other hand, was not. Dr. Benton put me in here on Friday. It was now Sunday. Chris had not left my side the entire time. Birdie and Kent drove down from Nashville. They were staying at the house with Stevie.
I was trying to rest as much as I could. My discernment kicked in and I refused to eat breakfast this morning. I would only drink fluids. Chris tried to fight me on it. I told him to trust me and hush. It had been 14 years but I remember what contractions felt like. Around ten thirty, a heavy one finally hit me. I squeezed the shit out of his hand when he grabbed it.
"I hit the button," he said. "Breathe baby."
Moments later, my day nurse, Bayley came in.
"Iris, what's going on?"
"Contraction," I said as I breathed through it.
"Let me check you," she said and grabbed a glove.
She got the glove on and sat on the edge of the bed. Grabbing my left leg, she moved it out and moved her hand to where it needed to be to check me.
"Oh....okay....let me call Dr. Benton. I think we are going to be having us some babies either today or tomorrow. Did you eat breakfast this morning?"
"I did not," I said with a smile. "I just drank my juice."
"Smart lady," she said, winked at me as she pulled the glove off.
"Are you going to tell me how dilated I am?"
"You went from two and a half centimeters to seven. He's not on duty so let me go call him."
After she walked out, he looked at me.
"You want me to start calling and texting everyone?"
"Sure. The next 24 hours are going to be exhausting so I'm going to rest as much as I can."Leaning down, he kissed me sweetly; "You do that baby."
I actually fell asleep.

Bayley actually woke me up about an hour later.
"Dr. Benton is on his way in, Iris. Let me check you again."
She checked me again; "Eight centimeters. Your body just said to hell with it, we are going to have these babies. Your blood pressure is still high but stable. Do you want some water or ice chips?"
"Yes please."
"Chris, just let her rest."
"I am. Kent and Birdie are bringing Stevie."
"Maybe my body can hold off I can have them after midnight."
"Why is that," Bayley asked.
"Spring equinox is tomorrow."
"Oh, that would be special."
"Yes it would. Buzz me if you need me," she said and walked out. "I'll have Faye bring you some ice chips."
