Detention Redemption

I felt like I was in prison.

This strange place was so mysterious, dark, and cold. How did people end up here a lot?

"Welcome to the Westwood High detention center. Any excuses you have to say on why you ended up here, leave it for your parents because we don't care." Miss Colleen, the school's study hall teacher spoke out.

Looked like someone needed to take a chill pill. The 'detention center' was the school's library. And yes, maybe I was being a bit dramatic myself but it was still just weird. I couldn't believe in a million years I'd ever be here.

But it had to be done.

"Since this is your first infraction with us Harper there won't be any major punishments, but you will be getting a warning and two days of detention. So if I were you...I'd get very comfortable missy." She smiled smugly.

Yeah right. Like I would be here after tomorrow. I hated it already and it's only been fifteen minutes.

Huffing my breath, I took my seat around three others students. One who was clearly going through an Avril Lavigne/emo punk phase staring off angrily out the window. The other was a boy playing around with a DIY paper fortune teller. And the last was a girl who just loved the color purple. Not the movie either. Like everything she had on and kept rummaging in her bag for from curling irons to lip gloss was purple.

But we all appeared to share one feeling. A miserable one.

I hoped my dues here would pay off. Maybe when I saw Ryder again, he would understand I was willing to put myself out there like no one else.

"And make sure you bring me something to snack on tomorrow too! If you've got me out here babysitting you for your inappropriate behavior, you can help me out a little. That's how we do exchanges around here." She explained.

Graciously not responding with anything but a faint grin despising how much of a terror I felt for not doing anything truly wrong, I laid my head down on the table counting down the seconds I would be out.

But just as I was about to drift off into a short nap hoping that could at least be okay, I abruptly heard the door barge open as all eyes fixated on who was entering.

"Oh look at what the cat dragged in! Mr. McKenna, nice to see you again." She told him.

Eying her coldly, Ryder smiled through his sheer annoyance. "Well, you know it couldn't have been a good day for you without seeing me, Mildred." He said clutching onto his backpack. He slammed down a detention slip from his pocket.

"How many times do I have to tell you to address me as Miss Colleen?" She corrected.

"When I finally start giving a rat's crap of what you want from me." He fired back casually, taking out a container of chips, placing it in front of her too. She nodded and gestured for him to park it. I continued to be in dismay.

What was he doing here?! More importantly, why? I thought Mr. Mack only wrote one.

"Just take your usual seat, and no talking or hitting on the girls." She sternly warned.

"Oh please, I bet that's the closest action you get to see anytime soon." He teasingly replied and sat right next to me.

Quickly, my heart began to beat fast and my palms broke out into a cold sweat. But without saying another word, he just dropped his stuff in a nearby empty chair next to mine as well. All girls were solely staring at him mesmerized by his presence or as if he was a fresh piece of Bubblicious chewing gum they wanted to devour at once.
