Panting, Baldur ran towards the portal that the boy and his father he opened.

The bright light grew into the gloomy sky. As he came closer, it felt like it tried to suck him in again.

Your hand slipped off his shoulder.

"Baldur!", you gasped.

His hand jumped forward and grabbed you.

"Don't go!", he begged with a worried shimmer in his eyes. "You need to come with me. Please!"

But you shook your head.

"I can't.", your fingers locked with his, desperately trying to hold onto him. "It holds me back."

"If you stay here, I can't get you."

The look in his eyes changed. Fear lit up inside the blue.

"I'll wait at the bridge."

"For how long?"

"As long as I can...", a soft smile appeared on your lips. "I love you."

Without letting him have a moment to react, you let go.

The force of Helheim pulled you back. A soft gasp escaped you as it grabbed you by the feet and pulled you into the depths. With full force, you slammed into the stone.

But this was the world of death.

You didn't feel anything.

It just shook you to the core.

Helplessly, Baldur was torn into the light.

The dark world faded.

Blinded, he raised his arms to shield his eyes.

Clouds wrapped around his body all of a sudden.

He tore his eyes open again, only to find himself flying through the air above the lake again. He turned around to see where he was falling.

Below him, the bridge of the temple came closer and closer.

It had moved, he noticed.

Landing on his feet, the ground below him started shaking as he hit it.

With a growl stuck in his throat and eyes full of rage, he raised his head, only to frown the next moment.

"What is that?", he mumbled to himself and looked at the giant serpent.

Usually, the creature was supposed to hide from others. It's only purpose was to wrap around the world and choke the life out of it.

But as you and Baldur had crossed the lake for the very first time, you had pointed out it had moved. Back then he had thought it was just a strange inconvenience.

But seeing it now, with its head out the water and eyes so yellow they seemed hateful, it appeared to be livelier than ever.

Its large eyes moved down to lock on the small man who was standing on the bridge of the temple and eyed it with a mixture of confusion and surprise.

The mouth opened, a low sound escaped. It was something between a hiss and a growl. Teeth were exposed.

It was a strange sight, considering that normal serpents didn't have that many teeth.

"Why are you awake?", Baldur asked, thinking it would be able to answer.

A low, vibrating voice made the air shake. But not a single word sounded familiar nor like a language.

He frowned.

Something seemed off. It was as if he could feel that the serpent was part of the strangers and boys plan.

But wherever he looked they seemed to be gone.

How much ahead were they?

Time worked differently in the nine realms. A few days spent at Helheim were hours in Midgar.

A displeased growl escaped him.

"Fine...", he walked to the entrance of the temple and tore the doors open.

Maybe checking the bridge would help him find out where they went.

His steps echoed from the naked walls of the inside.

The temple seemed empty, but something made him feel watched.

His eyes jumped through the room.

There was a smithery located right before the chamber that led to the bridge. A small fire was still lit inside the oven.

As he stepped closer, whispering filled his ears.

"I can hear you...", he mumbled and grabbed one of the weapons that was laying on display. "Show yourself. Or I'll destroy everything."

He snapped the metal half of the shield in two.

Someone let out a gasp.

A smirk appeared on Baldur's face. He grabbed another item.

But all of a sudden, an invisible force held him back. Something sharp dug into the back of his hand. Blood flowed out.

Grinning, he let out an amused huff.

"You think this hurts me?", he laughed and let his hand snap forward in an attempt to grab whoever was trying to scare him off.

His long fingers wrapped around something thick, solid.
It was a throat. A groan filled the silence.

The feeling of someone resisting crawled over Baldur's arm.He pulled whoever was struggling in his grip closer, flashed them a broad smile and raised his hand so high that the person started kicking with their feet in the air.

Before his eyes, the air curled.

A half bald head appeared, followed by blue skin and clothes that seemed like the garment of a smith. It was a man, bearded, old looking but also young.

At the sight, Baldur's eyebrows rose.

"A dwarf?", he asked, pleasantly surprised.

With his eyes squeezed shut, the dwarf gifted him a stubborn expression.

"Let me down you wanker!", he growled but was already starting to choke on the lack of air.

"The boy!", Baldur hissed. "And his father. Where can I find them?"

"Fuck off!"

His grip tightened.

The dwarf let out a gasp. His face pulled together. He was struggling for air.

Baldur didn't have time for this. He could feel his death was knocking at your door.

But he had made a promise.

Only thinning about your last words to him made him wish he could go to you now. But he needed this boy. And he needed a way to save you.

That was all that mattered.

"The boy.", Baldur repeated, more clearly and persistent this time. "Where is he and his father?"

His fingers tightened around the dwarfs neck.

But the stubborn little man refused to open his mouth.

"The serpent!", another voice suddenly answered. "They are inside the serpent."

Confused, Baldur looked around.

Another dwarf appeared. He was taller than the other, looked more human. But the look in his eyes gave away that he wasn't as brave as his friend.

"Shut up!", the blue dwarf hissed.

But Baldur had already heard enough. With a grin, he threw him away and bowed his head in thanks.

"Wasn't that hard, was it?", he chuckled and rushed out.
