The first few chapters are literally going to be 50% references, 10% plot.

They were very fun to write.

I stare up at the gates.

Metal, unwelcoming. But unlocked. Probably for the first time in a while, considering that this is a boarding school, and everything needed is inside. A prison, I call it. A place where you enter, and you stay.

With a deep breath, I enter.

There's no creak as I push open the gate, stepping into the rest of my life. They close behind with a sudden clang. No going back now.

Now I can look around, I do. There are other people all around, a rainbow of clothes and hair-colours. No eye contact, no acknowledgement of any of them as I walk on. 5 building make up the site, probably one for each main area, plus dorm rooms: building, redstone, PvP and parkour, and magic.

Magic.

Not teaching magic; how to spot it. Avoid it. Because magic is illegal, and as far as the rumours go, punishable by death. I've hidden any evidence of what I am, safe at the bottom of my bag or covered by the sleeves of my brown jacket. But if anyone finds out...

I shake away the thoughts. I don't want to think about what would happen if anyone found out.

There's a main entrance just ahead of me, but I have to stop as a couple of students run past with swords. Looking over, I see two boys play-fighting - one wearing a white t-shirt with red sleeves, and the other in a green hoodie with a white smily face mask over his face. I continue on, opening the wooden doors of the building entrance and stepping inside.

'Scar! Hi! You are Scar, right?' Another person, smaller than me instantly barrages me with words. I let out a small yell.

'Uhh... what?  yes? Who are you?'

'Grian. Your roommate.' I finally calm down and get a good look at Grian. He's wearing an oversized red sweater and a pair of grey trousers, his hair shaggy and a browny blonde colour. A smile lights his face, and I smile back.

'I... were you waiting for me?'

'Yeah. I've been told to show you around. It's break currently, but if we're especially slow we get to miss redstone class this afternoon.'

'You... hate redstone?'

'I just don't understand it... all the flux capacitors and t-flip flops.'

'Oh same... I've always preferred building.'

'Traps are fun though. But they never work first time...' Grian bounds off, further into the building, and I follow.

'This is the main building. Canteen over that direction, while dorms are the other side. A few indoor areas too, in case it's too rainy. Plus an area for shops and selling stuff.'

'You have shops?!' I can't help but gasp back. Grian grins.

'Lots. Some by multiple people, some independent. Me, Iskall and Mumbo tried to make a mega company called Sahara a little while back, but it didn't really work. I might've broken it with a potato.'

No further information is provided, though I want more, confusion growing with each thing Grian says.

'Where are we going to now?' I ask, changing the subject.

'Dunno. Let's just walk around and see where we end up.'

'Alright.' I shrug, continuing on behind Grian. He points out a couple more places that other corridors lead to. I try to remember, but I know I'll forget by tomorrow. Just as I'm trying to remember where the toilets, canteen, storage areas, swimming pool, animal shelter and a billion other things are, a dude with long pink hair and what looks like a king's outfit runs over yelling 'Grian! High five!' With a small laugh, Grian accepts the high-five offer, laughing as the guy runs off again to his friends. Seeing my confused expression, he explains.

'Technoblade.' He tells me, like it's all I need to know. I nod slowly back, pretending to understand. As we continue, we meet a few others who Grian knows and I don't.

'That's Scott. He has the sass and popularity of a school bully, but he's actually really nice...  Hey Scott!' Grian calls over to the leader of the group, a blue haired guy appears. I give a shy smile as Scott waves back.

'Hi Grian! New guy?' He speaks in an obvious Scottish accent.

'Yeah, Scar.'

'Hey Scar. Welcome to MCYT high school!' His companion, a taller blonde guy with brown eyes and a matching blue denim jacket to Scott waves too giving a small 'hi.' Seeing me looking, Scott explains.

'Oh, this is Jimmy. He's my boyfriend.'

'He's not your boyfriend!' Eavesdrops another guy passing by with brown hair streaked with green. Grian rolls his eyes with an amused sigh.

'And that's Joel. All the personality of a bully, but as friendly as Scott when you know him. And very bitter that Scott and Jimmy won the cutest couple award over him and Lizzie.'

'Me and Lizzie are better than you!' Yelled Joel from afar, to laughter from Scott and Grian. The other guy in a half-black, half-white hoodie with long matching-but the opposite way around dyed hair covering what little of hours face I can see waves too.

'I'm Ranboo.' He greets too. 'Not Scott's boyfriend.'

'I hope not.' Jimmy adds, seeming more disappointed than defensive about Scott cheating on him.

'You taking him to the principal?' The subject and mood quickly changes

'No way. Not after Stress.'

'Stress...?' I intervene, noting the name in my mind.

'Oh, don't worry. Just a rumour.' Grian brushes it off as nothing, though I can tell it isn't. 'Anyway, I should show you to our room. It's up these stairs... See you later, Scott! Bye Timmy! Bye Ranboo!'

'Bye Grian! Bye Scar!' Calls the Scot as me and Grian's path dissects from the main corridor up some stairs.

'Well they seemed nice...' I decide to speak. Grian nods back.

'Most people here are... Hey Cub!' I crane my neck, only able to see the black hair and shirt of the passing stranger. There's a 'hey Grian!' back before he disappears.

'He's in some of our classes. Must be late for something. He runs the school newspaper - Hermiton Herald. Some strange articles over its time, but certainly a good way to keep up on news. And Cub himself is cool.'

'Wow... can you buy this newspaper in the shopping place?' I ask back, trying to sound like I get some kind of grip on what's going on here.

'Yep. Oh, watch out for the article he's written trying to figure out what you're going to be like. Hilarious, but incorrect. Ah, here's our room.'

I catch a glimpse of the number on the door before we enter, remembering it for later. Inside is a surprisingly cozy eating area, with a kitchen off the back, a window, and sofa. Three doors, two on the right, one on the left. Grian opens the door of the closest on the right. There are two beds inside, one covered and surrounded in what's probably Grian's stuff, including a suspicious number of parrots, and the other seemingly mine.

'Nice place.'

'Lonely on my own in here, but yeah. BigB and Bdubs are in the other room. Used to be a friend in here but they... left.' Seeing my expression, he adds. 'Oh don't worry about it. Just try and settle. I should head to Redstone class. Piston doors. You wouldn't want be be there. There's a timetable on the wall, and some bedding in the drawer under the bed.' Grian explains. 'Apart from that, tell me if you need anything. Bye, Scar!'

The door slams shut behind him as he leaves, and leaving me standing confused in the middle of the room.
