All her life, she wonders where her father was. Her mother always told her he was away. But now she doesn't know if she should believe her mother or not. She knows, her mother only trying to protect her. But she can't take it anymore. She wants to know where her father is. So one day after school she dared ask her.
"Mother?" She walked into the house and to the living room where her mother was sewing.
"Yes?" Her mother kept on sewing. Her mother was young. It's like she never ages.
"Where's my father?" She asked. "I want to know, the truth, please?" Her mother winced, she had poked her finger with the needle. "Mother please."
"Ceres," her mother sighed. "I already told you, where your father is."
"Mother your lying to me," Ceres knelt by her mother. "Please tell me the truth."
"Ceres," her mother sighed. "I don't know."
"What?" Ceres frowned.
"I don't know where he is," her mother set the sewing kit down. "He never told me where he went."
"But how come you said you could speak to him?" Ceres asked.
"That's something I'll tell you once you're in high school," her mother said.
Ceres wonder what secret her mother was hiding from her.
"Don't ask your uncle either because he doesn't know," Ceres sighed. "Not even Omar."
Great, now she doesn't know where to get some answers. She'll wait.
"I'm going to take Pudding out for a walk," Ceres said.
"Alright but be back before it gets dark," her mother said.
Wasn't just her, or has her mother's belly gotten bigger? Last month she wasn't like that. Strange. Shrugging it off, Ceres walked out. Pudding, waging her tail. Her uncle Kenny had bought the dog for her when she turned ten. It was a big surprise. And since then, they have been inseparable.
She walked down the street towards the park. Soon she'll be entering high school. She couldn't wait. Though she barely turned 14, she started school at a young age. Her mother put her in preschool at the age of one. Well, probably much earlier than that. Either way, she was still young.
"Ceres!" She looked up. Jeffrey ran over to her. He was like an older brother to her. Always caring for her, protecting her. He was older than her, his 24. And so handsome. To bad his an adult. "Hey what's up?"
"Just walking Pudding," I said.
"Hey you," he knelt down petting Pudding. "How's school?" He stood up. They walked around the park, finding a grassy spot to sit. She let Pudding run around. She didn't go far.
"It's good," Ceres said. "Lots of homework."
"I see, how's Cassidy," Cassidy is my mother. He always calls her by her first name.
"My mother okay," she frowned. "Though I feel like she gained some weight."
"Oh," Jeffrey frowned. "Um, is she dating?"
"No why?" Ceres said.
"Nothing, it's a stupid thought," he said.
"Tell me," Ceres said.
"Well, maybe she's seeing someone," he said. "And maybe she got pregnant? I mean it's the only explanation why she gained weight. I know your mother. She never gains weight ever; pregnancy is the only explanation."
Her mother is pregnant. She wouldn't just go and get herself pregnant. It can't be.
"No, maybe it's that time of the month," she said.
