"You can rewind time, Max. That's fucking insane. We have to play!" My friend Chloe said after I finished demonstrating my powers to her for the first time. I just rolled my eyes at her. Did she seriously think my power was just a toy? That was a stupid question. I had known her forever. And the answer was quite obvious. Of course she did.

"I don't have time." I told her.

"You did not just say that."

It was at that moment, I started to get a nosebleed. I raised my hand up to my face as Chloe spoke. "Uh.. Check out your nose. Too much blow?" She watched me and leaned in a bit closer to me, sitting across from me in the booth at the Two Whales Diner where we'd met this morning for breakfast. "Hey, are you okay?"

"Too much excitement. See what happens when we hook up again?"

Chloe looked thoughtful for a moment. "Then... Let's go to one of my secret lairs and fully test your power. You need a sidekick to guide you."

I sighed softly and then gave in. "Okay, Girl Wonder. Show me the way to Chloe's Cave." I laughed softly and we started to get up from our booth.

Chloe finally believes me, and I wonder what kind of crazy shit she has in mind now. I thought to myself as we headed for the door.

"Okay Supergirl, let's go to my secret place!" Chloe said excitedly as I reached her, where she'd been waiting for me by the door. Then my phone started to ring and I began to pick it up. Before I could, Chloe spoke out in protest. "Don't even answer. We have places to go and people to do... Come on, before mom starts some more shit. Let's bail!"

"It's Kate Marsh, from Blackwell.."

"Big woop. You don't call me once in five years and now you're all over some beeatch you see every day at school? I see how you roll. So go ahead, chat up Kate Marsh from Blackwell. I've got other people to hang out with too."

I just rolled my eyes at her. She was my best friend and all.. And I loved her. But I'd decided to answer the phone. "Hey Kate, what's up?" I asked as I picked up.

"Please, don't let your best friend get in the way." Chloe said from behind me as I turned away to talk.

"You okay?" I said into the phone, glancing over at Chloe. "I promise, Kate. I won't forget. I swear. Just do your homework and don't stress. I really don't think we should go into this right now... I'll call you later, okay?"

"Thanks, Max." Chloe said, sounding annoyed as I hung up the phone and turned to face her again. She had her hands on her hips and was looking kind of pissed. "If you'd rather chill with Kate, please go ahead."

I had noticed her mom getting onto her about something while I'd been talking to Kate. But I had a feeling it wasn't just about that. She seemed kind of jealous. Angry that I'd choose to talk to someone else over her. "You are ridiculous. I'm chillin' with you, okay?"

"For now. Let's rock." We left the diner and went to her truck. When we were both inside, she drove us off to her secret hideout.

"Is this a race?" I complained as we walked the rest of the way there.

"Keep up." Was all she replied with. And I sighed.

"How many times are you going to get pissed at me this week?"

Chloe turned toward me and shrugged. "That depends on you. And how well you do in this phase of the test." Then she turned her back to me again and kept walking. "Welcome to American Rust, my home away from Hell."

I smiled a little. "Raw and rough. It suits you."

"Max, do you know how awesome this is?" Suddenly she seemed excited again, and less pissed off, clutching a bottle lightly in her hand as she smiled at me. "I get my best friend back, and she's also supersized?"
