[A/N: Half-assed because I literally JUST found out about Mermay, and it's the last day of May. Aka I missed out on all that mermaid content.]
Cross, to put it bluntly, always found himself walking to the beach during his breaks, the sound of the waves calming him regardless of what state he was in before. He just.. Had this pull. It was like a gentle tug, as if a rope was against his soul, urging him to go further. It didn't hurt, really, and he found himself doing it regardless of whether or not he got the tugs.
It wasn't always the easiest to be able to be at the beach alone with the ocean as his company, but luckily, the place he stayed hadn't actually cared about the tales of mermaids. They had no interest in hunting them down, in which he was grateful for.
He's very well aware of the fact that otherwise, he'd have been pummeled into the ground, accused of trying to earn some riches himself. At least they weren't complete dicks here.
And. Well.. Maybe his trips had increased when he met a certain brash boy just a year younger than him who was almost always at the beach. A certain boy who went by the name of 'Killer'. And, well, he couldn't be the one to judge him. After all, his name was Cross. Two weirdos they were.
Killer, specifically, liked to pull pranks on tourists by dumping water on them. It led to a lot of adrenaline-filled chases, but somehow, Killer always knew the way out. In a way, Cross admired Killer. The other was fast and dependable. Cross was more of a tank if anything, but Killer adored him all the same, and he'd be lying if his heart didn't warm up at that.
But- Well. One day, Killer walked up to him. It was nighttime, and they were sat on the sandy beach, Killer leaning his shoulder against his.
"..Hey, Cross?" Killer started, speaking almost hesitantly. His voice was so soft, he almost hadn't heard it.
Cross blinked, turning his head towards him, or well as much as he could with Killer hogging his left side. "Yeah?" He still found himself panting, a little tired out from today's activities, but it was the fun kind. It was a pleasant feeling, all too much of a reminder of what they did.
"Can I.. tell you something?"
He softened, sending a fond smile Killer's way. "Of course."
Killer smiled back, lifting his head abruptly. "Well. Uh."
He clapped his hands together as he stood up, and Cross couldn't help but watch, gazing over the skeleton he couldn't help but admit that he liked him. He just looked so beautiful. Killer grinned down at him, and Cross could feel his cheeks heating up, lowering his head a little in a pitiful attempt to hide it. Killer didn't say anything, reaching a hand out that Cross took, pulling him up. In fact, Killer had almost pulled him a little too hard, as Cross had stumbled, nearly falling into Killer, which would've lead to another mess.
Killer just laughed. "Woah there oreo boy, maybe we should go onto a few more dates first before you're falling on top of me, eh?" Cross blushed, and he realized Killer might've already known about his little crush. It was probably obvious anyway.
"Sooo.. well.." Killer started, before continuing.
"I think it'll be better if I just show you."
Cross blinked in confusion as Killer headed straight for the ocean. Before he could stop the other, Killer jumped in, seemingly disappearing. Cross was panicking a little bit. "KILLER???" He half-yelled, knowing that the residents nearby would be angry at him for yelling so late in the night.
Minutes passed, and so Cross took a step in the cold water before a hand reached out, grabbing his foot and dragged him down.
He slammed into something, blinking a few times as he opened his eyes. He was met with Killer, who smiled at him with sharp teeth. There were red scales on the tips of his ears, as well as covering parts of his collarbone, and some around his body in general, and-- When was he looking at Killer so intently?
Killer chuckled, a red flush overtaking his features, and Cross just heated up.
He could feel it increasing when he felt what was Killer's tail wrap around his legs, leading to him being trapped by the shorter, and he couldn't find himself annoyed at that. If anything, he liked it.
"S-So you're..-"
Killer completed his sentence. "A mermaid, yeah. ..I.. I wasn't all too sure if you'd be okay with it, but then I realized you're too much of a softie."
Cross gave him a small smile, and Killer returned it. He took his hands in his, giving them a slight squeeze. Killer's finger bones were sharper, a little bit longer too, and yet those hands could be gentle all the same.
"I love you." He whispered, and maybe it wouldn't have been heard, lost in the wind and the sound of the ocean, yet Killer had. He stared at him with such fondness and adoration that his heart was swelling in glee.
"I do too."
It was like in those cheesy movies Killer liked to make fun of that he liked. Killer's sockets started to close, and Cross found his drifting as well, and their lips met, a warmth filling the two. Cross could find himself getting lost in that warmth- lost in him. His friend. His newfound lover. And well, he found that he didn't mind.
Maybe there were some problems. Cross was a mammal meant to stay on land, while Killer was meant to stay on the water, and despite how they were meant to be apart, they'd always found a way to each other. Maybe that was okay. Maybe that was something Cross had been content with.
His worries always felt rushed away when he looked into those white rings of a light, regardless of what they were, and he could just relax in what was their time. They made it work, and that was that had really mattered then.
