The next morning, Blair was already up and changing into fresh clothing Queen Elinor had given her. It wasn't her usual attire she was used to. A dark blue dress that fit her body perfectly. It was shocking how her and the Queen wore the same sized dresses.
She stood in front of a mirror, glancing over her features. Her skin was slightly tanned from being out in the sun all day everyday. Little bags were under her blue eyes, from the nights she couldn't sleep in the cave. Freckles scattered across her cheeks. Sighing, she pulled her curly blonde hair up into a neat bun. She wasn't royal, but she could at least try to be presentable.
After she finished tidying herself up, she left the room and headed downstairs to the dining hall. Her tummy grumbled from hunger. The smell of eggs and bacon filled her nostrils as she licked her lips.
Once she entered the dining hall, she noticed the royal family was already seated. She couldn't help but chuckle as two of the younger brothers were half asleep and the third was mimicking every word his father spoke.
"From nowhere-" Fergus started. "The biggest bear you've seen! His hide littered with weapons of fallen warriors-" the king and one of the young brothers trailed their pointer finger across their left eye. "His face scarred with one dead eye! I drew my sword, and-"
Unexpectedly, Meridus stood from his chair and dramatically shouted- "Whooooosh!!" This caused the sleeping boys to awake startled. Once he realized his brothers peaked with interest, he continued. "One swipe, his sword shattered, then, chomp! Dads leg was clean off! Down the monsters throat it went!"
Blair watched, trying to keep herself from giggling. She didn't want to interrupt their little story. "Aww that's my favorite part." The king pouted as Elinor noticed the young girl.
"Mornin' Blair. Please have a seat." The queen said in her kind voice, gesturing to the chair beside Meridus. "You can eat whatever ye like."
Blair nodded, heading towards the table and sitting next to Meridus. "Mornin'" she smiled at the family.
Meridus glanced at the young girl, a small blush appearing on his cheeks. She was beautiful, he would admit but not out loud. "Did ye sleep well?" He asked, biting into a biscuit.
The Queen eyed the boy. "Princes do not speak with their mouths full." She told him sternly, causing the boy to roll his eyes.
"Yes I did. Better then I have in years." Blair answered the princes question. Once a plate of food was sat in front of her, she took no time in eating. Even though she lived in the forest, she still had manners. Manners her mother taught her.
Watching, the Queen was impressed. "Laddie, ye have more manners then my own sons." She chuckled, causing the young girl to blush.
Suddenly, the kings two dogs barged into the hall, barking. They ran to the king and tried to reach his food. "Don't let them lick... oh." Elinor stated frowning then turned to the triplets. "Ye boys are naughty. Don't just play with your haggis." She said as she saw the boys were playing with their food, not interested in eating.
One of the boys scrunched up their nose in disgust, making a gagging noise. The Queen rolled her eyes at the boys reactions. "Ye won't know unless you try it."
Just then, a maid rushed into the room, carrying three letters. Blair watched as she quickly handed the letters to the Queen whom thanked her.
As the adults were distracted, Meridus whistled at his younger brothers to gain their attention. The boys glanced over at their brother in question. Meridus pointed at the plate of sweets he had required earlier and moved the plate underneath the table.
The triplets glanced at their mother who was reading over the letters before climbing under the table to eat the sweets. Blair, silently watching the commotion, chuckled at the boys. "I see where ye brothers get the troublemaking from." She whispered to the prince teasingly.
Meridus chuckled nervously. "Uh ye-yeah." He said, rubbing the back of his neck embarrassingly. The two were interrupted when the Queen quickly called out to her husband. "Fergus!" All eyes went to the Queen. "They've all accepted!"
Fergus eyes widened, glancing at his son who looked at his parents confused. "Who's accepted what?" The young prince asked his parents.
Ignoring him, Elinor glanced towards the triplets. "Boys, you're excused." The boys gave their mother an innocent smile before dashing off towards the doors. One tripped, causing some treats to fall from his hands. He quickly stood up and grabbed the fallen treats and followed behind his brothers.
At first, Elinor was going to excuse Blair but she didn't. The young girl needed to learn royal duties if she was to stay with them. Meridus cocked his eyebrow at his mother. "What did I do now?" He asked.
Elinor narrowed her eyes towards her husband. "Your father has something he would like to tell you."
Surprised, the king spit out his drink as everyone's attention was towards him. Elinor gave her husband a disapproving look. Fergus gulped and looked at his son with sympathy. Nervously, he cleared his throat. "Meridus..." he hesitated, not having any clue what to say.
Elinor scoffed, rolling her eyes. "The lords are presenting their daughters for your betrothal." She informed her son.
"What!?" Meridus yelled, wide eyed. He didn't want to marry, let alone marry someone he hardly knew nor loved.
"This year-" his mother began happily, not noticing the sadden expression on her sons face. "-each clan will present a suitor to compete in the games for your hand."
Blair frowned at the whole ordeal. She hadn't said a word, not wanting to interrupt the families conversation. But to her, it was wrong. "Uh-" she hesitated. "Shouldn't he get a choice in the matter?" She asked, not understanding any of the royal duties. "Or at least choose someone for himself. Someone he- Uh- loves?"
The Queen glanced at the girl with a small smile. "My dear- uniting the clans will be beneficial. It'll keep any fights from breaking out between all of us." She knew the young girl didn't understand, but in due time she will.
Meridus frowned, slamming his fists on the dinning room table. He quickly stood to his feet. " I am the only prince that does what he's told!"
"Meridus!" His mothers voice boomed through the hall. "A prince does not raise his voice!" She scolded, disappointed. "You have been preparing for this your whole life."
"No!" The young prince glared at his mother. "This is what YOU have been preparing me for." He accused, causing his mother to scowl at him. "I won't go through with this. You can't force me!" Without thinking, he gently grabbed Blair's hand and pulled her with him out of the room.
"Meridus!" His mother called, but the young lad ignored her.
