We all know what a great ape is. But there is a legend of a form beyond that. Unlike Super Saiyan it was thought it could not be achieved no matter what. It had a few names. But the one the children most admired was great Saiyan.
The great Saiyan was a form achieved out of pure hatred and the ability to control the great ape form. The first person to do this was a Saiyan who stood against Freiza's ancestors. But he was killed with one blow. This is why it was thought to be fake by most cause back then, a great ape could pretty easily wipe out the Frieza race two are needed at the most.
And the great Saiyan was supposed to be five times stronger than a great ape. Since this was thought to be fake, no one strived for it. Vegeta thought it was pure folly, nothing more than a story made up for the joy of children. Until Gine somehow reached this form. He was surprised at the advance she'd made.
