Despair
The sound of cheerful music woke me up, my senses automatically turning on. I could feel Jiyeong next to me, her face in the crook of my neck, and both arms wrapped around my waist. My left hand was lying on her back and the other in her hair.
The room smelled of blood and sweat, like it had not been washed in centuries. My eyes opened to the bright lights intruding the room and I could feel Jiyeong squirming under me, groaning from the rude awakening.
"Breakfast will be served in ten minutes. I repeat, breakfast will be served in ten minutes!" The overly enthusiastic lady over the intercom said.
I watched as Jiyeong slowly sat up, looking around the room with squinted eyes and a grouchy face. "It's way too fucking early for this shit." She groaned, her eyes still adjusting to the light.
"Sae-Byeok! Good morning!" She exclaimed after finally noticing me, smiling sweetly.
"You look like a hot mess every time you wake up." I replied, full of honesty.
"Says you."
"What do you mean 'says you'."
"I mean you also look like a hot mess. A bit more of the hot, but still a mess." My eyes widened and I looked down feeling my cheeks heat up. "You really have to stop saying things like that."
Jiyeong chuckled before going silent for a couple of seconds. Suddenly she moved closer to me, wrapping her arms around my waist and laying her head on my chest. I closed my eyes, knowing exactly what was going through her head. This would have to be our last breakfast together. The last meal we could share, at least a little bit happily together.
"Hey, Sae-Byeok?" She called and I answered with a hum.
"Do you think we will see each other again?" She asked, an innocent voice hiding the true meaning behind that question. I was confused by the sudden inquiry, but she cleared up the question by adding, "Like, I don't know, maybe in the next life when we aren't under such circumstances."
"I don't- I don't believe in things like destiny or fate, or even the afterlife. But I do know that we will last forever. Even if we are dead and nobody remembers us, we'll always be close. I don't know how, or why, but I need to believe this." I was pouring my heart out, but what is new? When one of us leaves this Earth, I want her to know that what I feel is stronger than what life is, what this universe has created for us.
"Players, please line up to get your breakfast. I repeat..."

An hour had passed, Jiyeong and I had spent as much time as possible talking, about the future, the past, and the present. She held onto my hand like if she let go, I would disappear. But I never could.
"The game will begin in thirty minutes, please prepare for your last game, finalists. I repeat..."
Those words were the beginning of despair.
