Best friend

"I'm not mad." I responded quietly. Usually I was a good liar, I definitely could not say that today.

"Then why are you acting like it?" Jiyeong shot back in a snarky tone. I was a bit shocked to say the least, but she was not wrong.

"I'm not." I meant to say in a calm tone, but it came out harshly.

  "Then why-"

"I don't know!" I snapped, finally. To be fair, my version of "snapped" was raising my voice a tiny bit and crossing my arms. I did not have it in me to be loud.

Jiyeong watched to see what I would do next instead of saying anything.

"I really don't know why I'm mad, do you expect me not to be when I just watched some bitch try to strangle you? I would've stabbed him a couple more times if I could." Words fell from my mouth, but I was not paying any attention to them.

"Sae-Byeok..." Jiyeong smiled mischievously and I tried to think back to if I said anything wrong.

  Oh... shit.

"Do you, by any chance... actually care about my well-being!?" Her hand was at her heart like she was flattered by this unexpected situation.

I just stared into her eyes, and if looks could kill, she would be long gone.

"I guess that makes us best friends now! I mean, killing someone is a pretty big deal, but I don't mind best friend." Jiyeong pinched my right cheek playfully and I slapped it away, earning no reaction from her except for the same smirk.

"Don't call me that." I said flatly and laid back down, trying not to look into the eyes that were shooting darts into mine.

"What? Best friend?" She questioned, mockingly.

  "Yes, don't call me that."

"Sorry best friend, that's your name now. There is absolutely nothing you can do to change my mind."

I looked into her eyes with a challenging glare which she sent right back at me.

"Are you sure there's nothing?" I asked in a low, challenging voice, sitting up to meet her eye level.

"Deadly. What are you going to do Kang Sae-Byeok? Kiss me?" She laughed at my shocked expression.

What she doesn't know is my heart stopped for a second. A second longer than it should have.

'Maybe I do.' The thought ran across my mind before I could stop them.

Nope! Impulsive thoughts! I didn't voluntarily think that I promise!

"What? You don't want to kiss me?" She joked while puckering her lips up, she couldn't keep it up for long because soon, she burst into a silent fit of giggles. This only made me stare at her longer and with more confusion.

My eyes defied my objections and traveled down to meet Jiyeong's lips which were molded into an innocent smile.

They stayed there for a second, struggling to leave, before I dragged them back up to meet her eyes which were looking into mine.

She seemed to have noticed but did not say anything. That is weird, no teasing? Pestering about me looking at her lips? This is even more concerning.

Jiyeong popped herself on my pillow like she was planning on staying here all night. Yeah, I do not think so.

"Get off my bed." I demanded, but this didn't seem to intimidate her in the slightest.

  "I'm comfy, so no."

"Why are you being stubborn today? I'm not going to walk way over there to sleep on your bed." I dragged out the 'way' to make it seem like the walk was miles away.

"First, you look cute when you're mad. And second, you don't have to!" She exclaimed while looking at me like I was stupid.

"I don't look cute." I mumbled and lied down, facing the opposite direction of her. This felt very awkward, the silence, the slight breathing and the awareness that we were only inches apart. Barely.

"Goodnight Sae-Byeok!" She hummed out happily and snickered when I only gave a growl in response.
