Chapter 29

I limped over to Zoey, I was clearly not in their good books yet. Marvin and Nio managed to hook Marnie up to a bunch of wires, I was unsure why the wires were needed. Until I realised that this school was becoming the new Knight City, I saw four more Knights enter and shave off Marnie's head, dress her in a big royal purple robe and bless her with what looked like human blood by painting a circle on her forehead.

I was told the ritual would take over a week to work, so I managed to confront the mess I had made. I didn't leave the school and if I did it was by invisibility drug. Sadly I found Frankie and Isabella among the dead pile of enemy Knights, I prayed to the Holy One that they died quick and painless. Curiously I noticed a lot of corvids in the area: crows, rooks, ravens and magpies. They were all nestled in the trees as if waiting for something, until it dawned on me. They were simply saying goodbye to Marnie, none of them courted or fought. It was like they were mourning for Marnie.

A week later, I had Nio tell me while I sat on the roof that Marnie had become the new Holy One.
"It's amazing isn't it? We can go back to making souls again, I can't wait to make all those mothers happy again." I felt like I lost my sister, so I just replied with a sarcastic "yeah, great." Nio took out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it and puffed. He offered it to me snarkily saying, "have a puff it'll take the edge off. We can celebrate that people can believe in us again." I eyed the lit cigarette and refused it, saying in reply "why can't people make their own souls? It sounds like a fragile system to live by, you know what I mean?"

Nio inhaled on the cigarette and exhaled, his voice all husky sounding in reply, "well that's what you sign up for when you become a Knight. I mean it's not like you can undo becoming a Knight." I gave Nio a cheeky smile to which Nio retracted his statement, "fuck I shouldn't have said that now. Oh boy."
Within a few minutes I made my way to the soundstage to where my sister Marnie was, she was hooked up to more wires connected along her back. If anything could be fixed now she was the Holy One, she could and will sort it out. I saw two nurse Knights feed her rotten human flesh, now that Marnie's humanity had gone and was a proper Knight deity this wasn't cannibalism.

I cleared my throat, the two nurses bowed down to Marnie and left the room. The door closed between us, I was alone with the Holy One. We stood in silence until she hastily asked, "what is is Claire? Why did you interrupt my feeding time?"
I bowed and asked her, "Holy One I wish for me to be human again, I can take your mage and psychic powers as an exchange. I also want you to bring my brother Oliver back."

Pindrop silence...
"A-aah right u-um that I can do for you, but are you sure? Going back to being human makes you more well... shit." Marnie said, in a gobsmacked tone. I nodded in reply, standing up I explained to her about Oliver. Her right eye swelled with tears, she sat down with me on the foamed floor.
I was expecting her to decline my request, but she surprised me, "look Claire I can make you human again with your I mean our brother, but please know you will be so fucked with all these powers. I am curious though, why the sudden rush?"

I looked to the ceiling, replying "I just don't agree with me being a Knight. Ever since that war, I haven't been ok with it. Plus I want my brother back."
Marnie nodded in agreement, she got me to lie down while she zoned out for a bit and said "I found your brothers file, he was a hard one to find. I cannot resurrect him but can only reincarnate him. Sadly it's the same news for you. Basically you have to die now so you can be human in your next life."

That news broke my heart, I refused to believe it and started bargaining with Marnie. "Do I have to die? Just so I can't be a Knight and be with my brother. I've had such a journey with you all." Marnie looked at me with pity, "I know that Claire but this is the only way. Also when I reincarnate you're soul all of your memories with us will be gone... forever."
My head was racing, I expected this to be an easy switch nothing this extreme. I was at a crossroads, do I end my life and restart life as a human with all my current powers and with my brother. The only drawbacks is that my memories with Zoey, Marnie, Nio and Marvin are forever gone. Or shall I continue on the path I'm on right now.

I left and gathered Marvin, Nio and Zoey to the soundstage where Marnie was, I explained to them what I was going through.
Zoey and Nio were in favour of me reincarnating into a human. Marvin on the other hand, was ok with either decision.
It was then that I made my decision, I chose to live with my brother.
Goodbyes have always been shit with me, I hugged everyone goodbye and thanked them. "You guys are awesome, I'll see you guys soon maybe ok."
Marnie gestured them to go away, I was left alone again. My heart was thudding loudly in my ears, I was looking forward to becoming inferior than a Knight again.

I sat down on the foam, right next to me I saw a little glass vial. I guessed, no I knew that my brother was in that vial. Marnie who was my sister and the deity of Knights, gave me a little hug. "It's nice to know you sis, take care of our brother. I know I can't see you but I will appear in your dreams. You will forget me but just know, it's been an honour knowing you."

Marnie muttered a little spell and just like that everything went black.
