"What....?" Ponyboy whispered, his face going white.
"Pony listen, you can't tell no one. Dallas will lose his shit, and- I'm sorry, I ain't no cryer-" I tried to explain, as my throat started to sting. I really did hate crying in front of Pony, I didn't want him to see me like that.
"Hey, hey it's okay. I ain't tellin' no one." He stated calmingly as he tried to catch my attention. There was an awkward silence as we continued to walk.
"SAVE THE HORSE, RIDE THE PONY!" Dally screamed from the car, laughing at his own stupid remark. I ignored him.
"Well," He started, "Was it any good?"
"Hm?" I asked, my neck cracked at how fast I had turned it. I chuckled a little as I wiped away any water that had collected in my eyes.
"Why d'you want to know?" I teased nudging him, causing him to stumble. We were far enough away for Dally not to see my flushed face.
"Well, we're friends right?" He laughed, nudging me back, "Aren't friends s'posed to talk 'bout sex?" He shrugged as the car Dally drove came closer into our vision.
"I ain't tellin' you shit," I smirked as I pushed him onto the ground. In the split second of him stumbling, he grabbed my hand and dragged me to the ground with him. Just with my luck, I had fallen right on top of him, my legs on either side of his body, and my back facing the cloudy blue sky. Both our eyes widened as laughter came pouring out. Once the laughing stopped, I leaned in, surprising myself. He looked at me in confusion, as to ask if I really wanted what was to come next. But then sat up and began to lean in too. Just as I felt my eyes begin to close, I instinctively pushed him to the ground and played it off like it was all a big joke. I hated my stupid teenage girl hormones.
I started running, giving myself a head start to the car to have some time to think. Ponyboy was fast, which I thought made his name kinda funny 'cause it was accurate. It didn't take long for him to catch up.
"Well, now I'm curious!" Pony squealed, trying to revive the previous conversation as we hopped into the back seats of the car.
"'Bout what?" Dally asked as he pushed the gas peddle.
"Nothin'." Pony and I blurted quickly, causing Dally and Johnny to turn their heads simultaneously and give us weird looks.
The drive to Dairy Queen was torture, and not just because of the awkward vibe. Dallas had never gotten his driver's license, let alone his permit. I didn't even know how he got the car in the first place. In being so, the swerving of his unsteady hands on the wheel was making us all car sick. Getting to the drive-through alive was practically a miracle.
While we ate our food, Dally let the guys know about the Socs, and how we got a spy. The boys went wide-eyed once he had told them it was Cherry. Something about Cherry rubbed me the wrong way. She said she didn't like fights, yet she seemed to be the backbone of all of 'em. It didn't make any sense to me. The way my brother talked about her was captivating, whether I hated her or not. He talked about her like she was a piece of trash on the street, but a diamond all at once. It made me mad.
"So you think she might like me a little bit?" Dally asked, turning his head to look at each of us. I looked at Pony, who looked at me.
"I think she's kinda cute, no?" He asked as we remained silent. I looked at Pony again and he looked at his hands in guilt.
"Yeah she i-" He started, his face turning a slight red color that caused a ratched flame to burn in my stomach.
"Hey, why don't you shut your trap about Cherry," I finally snapped, now in a bad mood. "She's only a kiss ass to you 'cause she thinks 'yall are hot, okay?" I stated, the jealousy making itself know to everyone in the car.
"That don't bother me one bit." Dally sneered, and then went off about the Socs again. Then Dally and Johnny started arguing about Johnny turning himself in. To be honest, I wasn't really listening.
I had zoned out the whole car ride back to the church until the aroma of smoke clouded my nose.
"Damnit Johnny, will you put that smoke away? It's givin' me a headache." I asked as a pounding in my head grew.
"It ain't me." He responded as I overheard the shrill screams of young children ring in my ears. Someone was in trouble. I jumped out of the moving car towards the screaming.
"What the hell you doin', y/n?" Dally screamed as I ran as fast as I could. I heard Pony's heavy breathing right behind me, making me more at peace with the fact that I was running towards a burning building, flames shooting out the top. It was the church.
Pony tried to kick the door down, which made me want to make a snarky reminder that he wasn't in karate, but now wasn't the time. I grabbed a rock and threw it at the barricaded window. I turned my head to see Johnny, who gave me a sad smile, as the three of us climbed in. After that, everything felt like slow motion. The three of us had made an assembly line, and passed kids down to Johnny who handed them down to Dally who was now outside the window.
Just as the three of us climbed out, I heard two more screams.
"Damnit." I groaned, as Johnny and I looked at each other and climbed back into the building. My breathing had gotten considerably heavy. Not only had the smoke clouded my lungs, but the bra I was wearing constricted my breathing. Dally had stolen it for me to make my boobs appear smaller. It kinda helped but there wasn't much there to begin with.
As Johnny and I threw the last of the kids out, I collapsed onto the wood floor.
"Aw shit, y/n." Johnny cried as he dragged me to the edge of the window. That was the last thing I remember before the world grew black.
