"Well since Lucas won't be joining us anymore we need a filler." "Woah woah-" "we never said he was quitting for good." The lunch room echoed with chatter. "He was excused last time, this time he has asked you guys to ask me to postpone the campaign. Either he comes to practice tomorrow or we're finding a replacement ." The brunette boy said placing a metal lunch tin on the table. "Eddie, he won't come. We've already spoke to him." "Then it's settled, find a new member."

The school day was long and passed extremely slow. Though it gave the boys enough time to find a new member for tomorrow nights campaign. "Any luck?" "Zero" Mike sighed. "He's gonna kill us." "Definitely." "Hey I'll see you after class. I've got a stupid test" Mike said rolling his eyes as he ran down the hall. Dustin smiled as he walked in his last hour class.

"The student that can solve this problem first gets 5 bonus points on the test." The teacher said. "Go" Dustin stared at the paper and ran the numbers through his head. "Two hundred and sixty divided by-" "two hundred and ten." "Correct Mrs Lynn." The brunette girl placed her chin on her palm and continued doodling on her paper. "Kayla gets the extra points, any questions on how she got that answer?" The teacher asked. Dustin stared at the girls drawings. On the paper were simple trees and chairs. "What's with the chair?" He asked curiously. Kayla gave him a glance and went back to her paper. "The chair, you always draw that same chair. Why?" "I don't know." She lied. She drew the chair as it was a coping mechanism she just so happened to pick up. Kaylas home life isn't great, her father Jake is verbally, mentally and unfortunately physically abusive with Kayla and her mother Jess. A little over a year ago she had went though the most traumatic experience with her father involving a chair. To this day she still covers her neck form time to time out of habit. "You don't know?" Kayla looked up at the boy and shrugged. "It's easy to draw." "Did you happen to get the work from yesterday? I need some help with question six." "Yeah." She pulled out her work and scooted closer to the boy. "It's simple really, this is your common denominator and this is your-"

Soon the bell rang and students poured out of the doors. "Mike, any luck?" "No, even Landon said no." "Landon Meek? He's a total nerd why'd he say no?""he said he didn't want to be associated with the freaks of Hawkins high."

The boys weren't the only ones panicking. Kayla slammed the door to her car and started it. She looked as if she was in a hurry. She sped to the nearest farmers market and hopped out of her vehicle. "Where is it?" She slammed her hands down on the desk smiling. "Goodness girl you scared the sh-" "Alex, I can't believe you got a copy for me!" "It was hard, the we're selling out pretty quickly." He said looking toward a fully stocked table filled with the same book. "Alex.." "what's in it for me?" "I'll punch you in the throat so hard you'll be searching for your inhaler." The red haired boy looked at the girl and slid a book on the counter. Kayla squealed with delight as she opened the front page to a signature that read Amillia Grace. "Oh Alex!" She jumped up and down with the book. "She's going to be so happy!" "It took me a while to get that signature. Do you know how much Amillia talks?" "Thank you thank you!" She said blowing him a kiss as she backed up toward the door. "Wish your mom a happy birthday for me alright." "I will!" She ran outside and hopped as she through herself in the car. "She's going to flip." Kayla said as she took the long way home.

The door squeaked open as she snuck through the door to her upstairs bedroom. "Kayla." She put the book behind her back. "Yeah?" She said peeking in the office. "You need to water and feed the animals before you get your school work done. And work Frankie in the round pin." "Yessir.." she looked at her tired father who sat in front of some wrapping paper. "Would you like some help?" He looked up and cleared his throat. "Go get your chores done." "Yes sir." She quickly walked passed the room to hers shutting the door. She tossed her backpack on the floor and grabbed a birthday bag and gently placed the book inside. Placing some tissue paper she ran out of her room downstairs and slid on her boots. "Happy birthday mama!" "Thank you honey." Her mother said smiling as she was baking her own cake. "I'll be in in a little if you'd like help to decorate it!" "I would love that!"

"Frankie, Ducky! I'm home." She said running toward short grey building. "Where is it- hey get out of there!" She said pulling away a chicken from some sweet corn. "You're already fat enough as it is. Get any fatter dads gonna have ya plucked in no time." She scooped up some feed and shut the door behind her as she ran toward the Bob wired fence. "Frankie!" A sorrel gelding trotted toward the fence. "Hiya boy." She said petting him. He dug is face in the scoop as she quickly clipped a lead rope to his halter. "Come on."

Dinner was ready, the plates were set and the room was quiet. "Would you like to open your presents darling?" My father asked as he sat down at the end of the table. "I would love to!" My mother said excitedly. He handed her both of the bags and grabbed mine first. I put my hands together as her jaw dropped. "Oh Kayla you didn't!" She pulled out a ugly green colored book labeled the Wolf and the shepherd. "Open the first page." Her eyes exploded with happiness and tears. "Kayla Lynn!" She said hugging me. "How ever did you-" "Alex used his pretty boy charm to swoon Amillia." I laughed. My mother kissed my cheek and gently placed the book on the table. She grabbed my fathers present and smiled as she ripped through the paper. Her smile continued as she hugged the picture frame. "What is it?" I asked excitedly. She flipped the photo toward me. My heart dropped as it was a family picture of us. It wasn't that it was cute, it was that the day prior I had gotten into a fight with my father. Leaving bruises all along my body. You could tell in the picture I tried to hide them but the bruise on my neck was apparent. "Pretty." I said eating my food. My dad looked at me and smiled. "We can put it on the mantle." He said looking my way trying to get a reaction out of me. "Yeah, I think that's a pretty good place." I said smiling at my mother. "It's such a clear picture, the editing could have been better though. I think Kayla's a bit purple." I dropped my fork and looked at my dad. "Is it now? I had no idea. May I see mother?" I grabbed the frame and smiled. "Oh yeah, that big ol hand prints just some bad editing-" "I told you that you needed to cover it up." "I did, I used all of moms foundation." "You could have put a scarf on." "It was 90 degree weather-" "Kayla that's not an excuse. Apologize to your mother." I stared at my father who was gawking at me. I looked over at my flustered mother. "I'm sorry I ruined the picture because someone can't keep there hands to themselves." My father threw his plate at me and stood up. "Excuse me!?" I scooted back as I pulled my arms near my chest. "Jake!" My mom stood up. "Sit your ass down Jess!" He said as she sat down. "Come here." He said pulling my arm. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" "No you're not, you never are." "Please don't -" he pushed me up against the table and slammed my arms down. "Flip them." He said as he took off his belt. "I didn't do anything.." my eyes filled with tears and my knees began to buckle. "Jake please... not today.." "you stand up and I'll hit her harder." I looked over at my mother who's eyes were just as teary as mine. "FLIP THEM!" I quickly flipped my arms over, my palms facing the sky. I squeezed my eyes tight and suddenly felt a burn on both my arms. I hissed as I was hit again and again and again. I pulled my arms close to my chest and sat down quickly. My arms throbbing in pain. The room went quiet. My father cleared his throat. "Now.. who wants cake?"
