By the brightness of the sun shining through Nancy's blinds I could tell it was about noonish. Unfortunately I have been sandwiched between a very intoxicated Robin and a sleepy Nancy. Getting up to pee wasn't an option which is why I have been laying here wide awake for hours. What do you do when you're stuck in a spot and have no where to go and nothing to do? You overthink everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Deep down in my gut I feel bad about going out last night, my parents would have never allowed me to do such a thing and I went behind their backs. Then again I'm an adult, and it's spring break. I deserve to have fun. "What time is it?" Nancy said yawning. "I don't know you tell me." Nancy sat up and rubbed her eyes. "Oh my it's late. About 1:15." "1:15!?" I sat up quickly. "I need to go home and get my chores done!" "Already?" She said sleepily. "Yeah, I'll talk to you later! Thank you for everything!" I ran downstairs quickly. "Ah the girls are awake! Did y'all have a fun night?" Mrs. Wheeler said mixing some thing in a green bowl. "Oh yes very much! I have to leave but thank you for having me." "Of course dear, come back anytime." Karen smiled. "Not to soon though." Ted said flipping through the tv channels. I ran out of the door and down the street.

"I need to invest in new tires for me car." My breath shaky from running. I placed my hands on my hips and walked passed the family video store. I backtracked quickly and ran in. "Welcome to-" "Kayla!" "Hey.. Dustin. What are you doing here?" I smiled breathing heavily. "Just visiting a friend, are you okay?" "I don't run okay." "You ran here?" "I told you Top Gun brings all the ladies in." "I'm not here for Tom Cruise. Though he is fine as hell. I rather watch Castle in the Sky. It's such a cute movie by the way." I said totally ignoring Steve. "I spent the night with Nancy and Robin-" "is that where she is!? I've called her hosue phone three damn times today. She's late for work." "Can you let me finish?" "Sorry" "yeah Steve let her finish." "I said I'm sorry!" Dustin and I shook our heads at the man. "I have like a lot of stuff I need to do at home and I'm way way late so I ran all the way here-" "you ran all the way here from the Wheelers!?" Dustin interrupted. "It's cause I blew a tire on my car and I don't have a spare yet." "well I can take you home if you wanted." "No no absolutely not you're working and I wouldn't want to trouble you with that. I don't live close to town." Steve grabbed his keys and shrugged. "Oh well, this is our slow hour and I have yet to take my lunch. So I promise you you won't be any trouble." "Steve you're so sweet!" "Shut up Henderson." Steve replied smacking him gently on the back of the head. He grabbed the door and held it open. "Ladies first" I walked out of the video store being followed my Dustin who was smiling. "Can I drive?" "Are you on crack? Hell no you can't drive." Steve said locking the store. "It was worth a shot." He said getting in the backseat.

The drive was painfully quiet. Nothing but 20 minutes of trees and music. "Damn you do live way out here." "I told you." "Yeah yeah" Steve Harrington was a senior last year that made a dent when he left. He was a ladies man, he had great hair still does and he dressed like a daddy's money kind of boy. I wonder if he remembers bullying me in PE. If he remembers kicking my sketchbook down the stairs, or stepping on my pencils. I don't know if he even cares, but deep down I always knew he was a good guy. "Holy shit is this yours?" "Huh" I said looking up. "The one on the right?" "Yeah that's it." Steve went silent as he drove up our White picket fence driveway. " The American dream right." "You can say that.." he said quietly. "Yeah, nice place ya got here! Is that a horse!?" Dustin yelled from the back seat. Steve pulled up to the house and parked. "thank you for bringing me home. I owe you." "No you don't. Promise me you don't." I nodded at him and got out of the car. I guess he does remember after all. I watched the car drive away. I Quickly ran inside ignoring my mom's freshly mopped floors. "Kayla! Slow down honey you're gonna hurt yourself!" "Sorry mama!" I didn't bother putting my boots on as I ran to the back door. "Kayla!" "Yes?" "He's not home, and I've finished gathering the eggs. Take your time working Frankie today." A wave of relief hit me when I heard those three words. "Mama you're already so busy cleaning the house, I don't want you to have to stress about doing my chores." "don't you dare worry about it, you're a senior this year and you need to have fun. It won't bother me to pick up a few extra chores around the house." "Okay, thank you so much but if you ever need help with anything-" "I know Kayla. I know." I smiled and grabbed the door knob. "Oh by the way, Gabriel Cornwall is outback fixating the fence for dad and I. Don't be alarmed!" "Okay." I stepped out of the door and ran to the tack room. Grabbing a lead rope I walked to the edge of the fence and whistled toward the horses that stood in the field. "Watch out for that one. He kicked at me just an hour ago." I looked behind me at a boy with short curly brown hair. I ignored him and clipped the rope to Frankie's halter. " he doesn't kick out unless you give him a reason to." I walked him out of the pasture toward the round pin. "well I guess he doesn't like fence workers." "Or he just doesn't like you." "That could be it." I looked at the boy who sat down on a bale of hay. He grabbed a half empty bottle of water and chugged it. Some of the water spilled out of the edges of his lips and dripped down his cheek, traveling down his sharp jawline to his neck tracing his Adam's apple- "Do you ride?" "Huh" I stared at him awkwardly. "Do you ride?" "oh yeah, he's green so I'm still working with him." "He looks brown to me." I shut the round pen gate and began to lunge Frankie. "you're not funny." "Am I not? I think I'm hilarious." "shouldn't you be fixing the fence." "Shouldn't you be doing your own chores?" I dropped the lead rope. " I do, and what's it to you?" "nothing nothing, I just saw your mom out here this morning struggling with the water and I figured she needs some help so I talked to her. She talked about you a lot, she really loves you." "Yeah well I am her daughter." "That doesn't mean she has to love you." He laughed. "trust me, I know." "Your fathers nice too." "Uh huh" suddenly a crash of metal caused Frankie to spook and kick out. " I don't know if I'm justified seeing things, but I think he just kicked." "Wow thanks captain obvious." "Kayla you have a phone call!" My mom said poking her head out of the back door. "Tell them I'll call them later!" I rolled my eyes at the boy who was grinning at me. "Shut up." He put his hands up in defeat and laughed.
-
"It feels so good in here!" I said shutting the door. "Did he work good?" "Gabe? No. He talks to much." "Frankie." "Oh yeah, he's okay. We still need to work on desensitization but he's getting there." "Good!" My mother said putting a gallon of tea in the fridge. "Who was it that called me?" "Oh uh.. I wrote it down here somewhere.." she said digging through papers in the counter. "Eddie Munson and here's his number." I choked on my water. "He's definitely a lovely boy. He was so kind over the phone. He wanted me to tell you that he was happy you saw the show last night." My heart dropped to my feet. "So what did you watch!? Was it the new Top Gun?" She smiled at me excitedly. I couldn't lie to her, she's my best friend. "Last night Nancy took Robin and I to the bar and we went and watched his band perform. I promise I didn't drink anything and neither did Nancy. We were safe and-" "Oh good so you didn't see the new Top Gun without me, Not going to lie I was kind of upset!" "You're not mad?" "Why would I be mad? you went to support a friend!" I hugged her tightly. " wow don't squeeze me to death, who's gonna watch the new Top Gun with you!?" I laughed. " you really wanna see Tom Cruise don't you?" "Shhh" I pulled away from her. "Oh he also told me to tell you to call him back as soon as you could." I stared at my mother. "He sounded like he really really wanted to talk to you.." "mama stop it!" I said running to the phone.
-
I quickly dialed the number and listen to the ringing until

"This is Eddie" "hi!" The line was quiet. "Hii!" He said back. "I'm sorry I missed your call I was- busy." "You were being a little farmer i know. Your mom talks a lot." I gasphed looking at my mom. She giggled and walked upstairs. "She loves to talk to anyone that will listen." "Yeah, I Learned that quickly. I also learned that your favorite color is yellow and you sleep with a fan on 24/7." "Oh my god" I laughed. "Did she tell you all of my secrets!?" "Pretty much. I told her some of mine so it's okay." "No, no it's not okay! I want to know your secrets!" " sorry ma'am, you should've answered the phone. The secrets are strictly between me and your mom." "Well dang it." "She also told me you collect plastic horses." "Okay that's it. That was the line. You know to much! Im hanging up!" "It's okay, I collect them too." "W-really?" "Pfff no. But I think it's cute that you collect little horse toys." "First off they're not horse toys, their collectibles. Secondly, they'll be worth millions one day so back off." I couldn't help but smile as I listened to him over the phone. "Okay okay, But seriously, I wanted to ask you if you wanted to hang out tomorrow. At my place, or yours or-" "absolutely, I would love that. But yours not mine. And you'll have to come pick me up because I don't have a vehicle." "Okay, awesome. Sounds like a plan. See ya then." "See ya then."
