"Wait where is it?" Nancy said digging through her vanity. "Aha!" She pulled out a brush and continued messing with Robins face. "Nancy back to the story!" "Oh right! Anways, I just feel him drifting. And I don't know, maybe he found someone better than me." "Kayla!" I jumped dropping my book on my face. "What!?" "Get your nose out of there and help me explain to poor Nanc that little Johnathans stupid and she doesn't need him." "Stop it, I really love Johnathan." "Nancy, It's spring break and where is he?" I said resting on my elbows. "He's at home because plans came up.." "of course they did, because that's what happens when they're trying to dump your ass." Robin said squirming. "He's not trying to dump me. He wouldn't do that. Not that way anyway." Nancy said squeezing Robins cheeks still. "Anyways, enough about Johnathan. How's Vickie?" "Oh shut up!" Robin said pushing away from Nancy. "Oh you know who we can talk about." They looked at each other and looked back at me. "No." "Yes." "Kayla and Eddieee!" Robin sang. "There's nothing there I was wrong." "What do you mean?" Nancy jumped on the bed and wiggled me around. "Nothing." "Tell uuuuus" She tickled me causing an ugly laughter to escape my mouth. "Okay okay!" I sat up and pulled my hair back out of my face. "He wants me to come to his show tonight-" I noticed Robins jaw drop as she shook my arm "but BUT!" She let go of me. "I told him I was busy because I don't know if I want to go." "Kayla!" Nancy squealed. "He's crushing so hard!" "What!?" "Honey he doesn't just invite any girl to his shows." Robin smiled. "Well what time is it?" "It starts at 7:30." Nancy smiled and looked me up and down. "Absolutely not." I pulled on her hand as she stood up. "You're not wearing those Rags to his show!" "Uh, these aren't rags. They're vintage and really comfortable." I said pulling on my flowery blouse. "Look even my socks match!" Nancy pulled out a 'The Smiths' shirt clearly ignoring my smile. "I don't even listen to them." "So, he doesn't know that." "What if he asks me what my favorite song is by them!? What then?" "He won't." Nancy said throwing the shirt at me. "You don't know that!" "I do because he'll be to focused on how hot you look." She looked at me and giggled as she pulled out a black skirt. "Uh no-" "yes."
-
"I look ridiculous." I stared at myself in the mirror. The shirt was sleeveless and way to tight and the skirt was just to short. "You look hot!" Robin said sliding off the bed. "I don't feel hot, can I please wear a sweater?" I said looking at the bruises that painted my arms. Nancy smiled and dug through her closet. "Here" Nancy said pulling out a oversized flannel. "Who's is this?" I asked slipping it on. "Just some old friends." "smells like Steve." Robin said straightening it out in the back. "We'll it's not his so. Anways, you can wear your crusty converse I guess." "Well thank you for being so kind." I said sarcastically. "Of course, they're just as brown as that flannel so you'll match." "My converse are white." She looked down at them and back up at me. "You should start washing your shoes more." Before I could speak up for myself she pushed me into her vanity chair and began poking my skin with brushes. "Nancy please don't go crazy." "I won't."
-
"I look like a metal head." "You look so good!" I looked at myself and shook my head. "I miss my vintage farm girl look." "Oh come on you have to admit you look sexy!" Nancy fluffed my hair around making it messy. "Oh come on, I at least want to look like I shower!" "Let's go!" The door swung open. "Wait you're wearing that?" Nancy said looking at Robin. "Yeah, do I need to change?" "N-no you look nice. Maybe I should change." Robin looked in the mirror and straightened up her blazer. "Maybe." "Oh come on!"
-
"Wait wait my my thighs are too big they're sticking together give me a second!" I said angrily as I slammed the car door shut. "Oh it's a full house tonight!" Robin said brushing herself off. "Is my hair good?" "Yes Nancy you look fine." Robin said looking at her. "I mean a button might pop off your dress, but don't worry Kayla might lose a button too. On purpose though-" "shut up Robin!" "Oh come on!" Nancy said dragging both of us.
-
The door swung open to three big guys screaming at each other. Robin giggled and ran inside. "Come on!" "I can't move Nancy!" The door lead to a dark room filled with music and loud noises. "It's so loud!" "What!?" "It's so loud!" "Oh yeah I know!" I followed Nancy through the crowd toward the already dancing Robin. "Is that them playing!?" I hopped up a little but couldn't see much over the large crowd ahead of us "I can't see but I think so-" robin grabbed Nancy's hand, and she grabbed mine. We were drug through the chaotic crowd which sent a rainstorm of anxiety my way. The music got louder as we got closer to the stage. I tightened my grip on Nancy's hand. She looked back at me and noticed my uneasiness. "Don't worry, he probably won't even see you. You're okay!" I smiled at her as we came to a halt. "Is here good!?" Robin yelled. We weren't in the middle or in the very front. We were off to the side a little which was good. "Yeah it's perfect!" "Wait because this is fire!" I laughed at Robin who slipped by us. "Y'all want a drink!?" "No and neither should yo-" "No thank you!" I interrupted Nancy. "Let her party." I waved at the drummer who had made direct eye contact with me. "Who's that!?" "His name is Gareth! He's also in Hellfire!" "He's kinda cute!" "Nancy he's in our grade!" "Oh" suddenly the song stopped allowing the crowd to scream. I watched Gareth signal over one of the guitarists. I didn't want to admit who it was. All of a sudden a hurricane of butterflies hit my stomach at once by just thinking about him noticing me. He turned around and made eye contact with me. A smile grew on his face as he blew a kiss our way. Nancy grabbed my arm and squealed. "Oh my gosh Kayla!" I stared at the man as he began to play his guitar. I began to melt into the crowd and vibe with them. The intense feeling of serotonin ran though my veins like a drug. If this is what it feels like to have fun i want it all the time. The room went silent and then filled with cheers. "Thank you!" Eddie spoke into the mike.
-
The band left the stage and made there way into the crowd as the next band made it to the stage. "Where is he!?" Nancy asked. "Guys look who I bumped into!" Robin laughed pushing Eddie toward me. "Robin chill out on the drinks for a bit okay?" "Eye eye capn" "wanna go somewhere a little quieter?" "Yes please." He took my hand and walked me to a corner in the room where we could slightly speak normally. "Now I understand why your so bad at listening." "Huh?" He joked. I smacked him. "Ew you're all sweaty!" He laughed "it's your fault you made me all nervous!" He said holding his hands together acting bashful. "It was a really good show, I really liked it!" " does that mean you'll come to more shows on purpose?" "Maybe!" I said. He looked down at my shirt. "The Smiths? You don't even listen to them. Do you?" "It's Nancy's shirt." "That makes since. You don't listen to good music so I was shocked for a second." I slapped him gently "okay jerk!" He laughed, which gave me enough time to follow his eyes which were drifting up and down my body. "So do you like this new me?" I said standing awkwardly " no." "No?" "No as in like- don't get me wrong you're fine. Like fine fine, I mean like you look good like I like your outfit like you're..you look good like it's a good outfit." He stammered. "Mhmm" I lent up against the wall staring up at the anxious man. " I just really like your, what do you call it?" "My vintage farmgirl look.." " yeah your farm girl look, I just like you." He widened his eyes. " I mean like I don't like like you I like you, like I think you're cool.." "oh well, I think you're cool too." he broke eye contact with me and smiled down at his feet. "All right fine I do like li-" "let's gooo I'm hungry!" Robin pulled on my flannel sleeve pulling it down my shoulder. Panic flooded my body as I yanked the sleeve back up my arm. "I gotta go, it was a really good concert. I had fun. Thank you!" I pushed passed the crowd toward the door exiting the building. "Kayla!" I turned to the door. "Can I call you tomorrow?" "OHH!" Robin poked her head out of the window. "Yeah. I would love that."
