It was a grey day,the kind where the sky represented an ash tray and the clouds were puffs of smoke.Sun sinking down below hills.Who knew where it spent the night?
"Jane,"El's mothers words held her gently in their imaginary arms, caressing her cheeks and stroking her hair with such delicate hands.
"Mama?"she stepped forward slowly, her hand reaching out before her as silence settled upon the dim room in which her mother sat in.She was going back and forth on her rocking chair,a creak sounding with each movement.
El kneeled in front of her mother, those glossy, kind eyes following her cautiously as she lowered herself on the ground. It's been years since she had seen her mother, let alone heard her say her name.Heard her say Jane.
"Mama..,"she cried, placing her head in her mothers lap,the scent of the forest surrounding her like a bubble.
One where it was just the two of them, the wind outside spinning them into a tornado of safety and peace.Terry moved her her hand to her daughters face, her fingers brushing each of her freckles. She sighed,at first no sound coming out,"I've missed you, darling."
El could feel tears gliding down from her eyes, over the bridge of her nose and finally sinking into her mothers blanket.
"I've missed you too,mama.."she managed to say shakily.Like a mother would,she held her daughters face up carefully."Now,darling,stop crying,I'm right here.You haven't lost me,"she whispered,giving the girl a weak smile.
She wanted to believe the smile, but El knew it wasn't real.It was a dream.Of course it was.Never in a million years would her mother be as mobile,as talkative,as emotional,as gentle as she used to be.
Well, El didnt remember those times, but oh how she wished she did.Just like she wished this wasn't a dream eitther.
"Something wrong?"her mother chuckled, bringing her daughter to sit on her lap.
"No,mama,"the brunette smiled, still holding back from the pool of tears that was about to cascade from her tired eyes.
There was quiet again, her mother thinking to herself, pupils dilating more with each thought.
Then sound came out of nowhere, quiet like a whisper but without words,a humming of a tune.An unknown tune.
"Jane,do you remember our song?"her mother wondered, staring straight ahead, not daring to look at the girls expression as it changed ever so lightly.
El could feel that her answer would crush her mother.Break her into a few little pieces and then gradually more as days flew by,slipping away.
"I don't..I'm sorry."The words came out hushed yet her mother laughed, confusing her to the very core.
Maybe it was some joke,Eleven thought.
"Of course you don't,you weren't even born when we listened to the song,"she smiled, her words getting blocked out as the weather outside got stronger.
"What do you mean?"she asked wanting an answer, completely clueless although everything was clear.
And then quickly things changed, the house in which they sat in falling apart and her mother fading into darkness.
