"On my signal."

Agent Romanoff nods at Agent Barton from down the cement block wall. A team of 23 S.H.I.E.L.D. agents have the perimeter of this small HYDRA facility base surrounded.

"There are eight in the building," says the comms assistant over their earpieces.

"All hostile?" Romanoff asks.

"One hostage."

Agent Romanoff takes a breath in. She looks to Barton, who nods, silently encouraging her. They've done missions like this thousands of times, but this one just felt different.

Agent Barton gives the signal, and the entire team bursts open the doors of the building, with some agents coming through the ceiling. Two helicopters surround the outside walls, ready for a quick escape.

Barton and Romanoff travel down the hallways, clearing their paths in the same routine they have always done. They've got each other's backs, like always. The sounds of gun shots, empty cartridges hitting the floor, desperate yells, and radio static echo off the cement walls.

Barton, Romanoff, and three more agents come to what looks like a control room connected to an experiment chamber. There are three men inside: two with lab coats, one in a military-style uniform. They stand behind a panel of electrical modules with a one-way glass window in front of their faces. Through the window, Agent Romanoff can see the small frame of what she assumes to be the hostage.

One of the men yells into the microphone, "Subject 020, engage power." He reaches to press a stimulation button but is interrupted by a loud banging against the door.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents all burst in, attacking the three men, while Barton and Romanoff pry the door to the holding chamber open. They finally break the door down, dust and bullets flying past their feet as they rush inside.

Romanoff shoves her hand out to stop Barton. They stare at the person in front of them. A slender, somewhat muscular girl with blonde, un-combed hair shivers in the corner of the cemented-room. She is wearing a hospital gown with no shoes or socks to cover her feet. She looks a tad malnourished and exhausted; her body pale and drained of all colors except a purple hue. A gunshot sounds in the distance, making the girl flinch.

"It's okay," Romanoff coos, stepping forward slowly, "They can't hurt you anymore."

The girl looks at Romanoff skeptically, as if she has heard those words before. She remains tucked away in the corner.

Agent Barton follows his partner's lead, reaching his hand out for the hostage to grab, "Come with us. We'll keep you safe."

The girl shifts her eyes between the two agents. She leans to her left, peeking around the two agents at the gaping doorway behind them. She sees a few HYDRA scientists on the ground. Her eyebrows raise, and it seems as though she is starting to believe the two agents. She then straightens back up, returning her gaze to them.

"We don't have much time," Barton continues, furrowing his eyebrows and glancing behind him again. He can hear footsteps pounding down the concrete hallway.

The girl shakes her head, trying to retreat further into the concrete, as if it's her only comfort.

Barton looks to Romanoff for some help, "HYDRA has already called for backup. We've got to go."

Romanoff shifts her stare from Barton back to the girl. She feels empathy for her. She can only imagine what this girl has gone through.

"I know you're scared, but we're here to help you," Romanoff says, stepping closer once again, extending her arm out.

The girl studies Romanoff's face. The agent's red lips have formed a soft smile, her eyebrows furrowed with concern. Her eyes show care, but more interestingly, there's a hint of understanding, almost as if the agent can relate to the girls pain. The girl shakes her head - 'there's no way she can understand this,' she thinks. Even so, the girl finds the agent comforting, different from the cold, heartless stares of the HYDRA agents she's so used to.

The girl steps closer, placing her hand in Romanoff's and follows the two agents cautiously. They weave in and out of the concrete hallways with Romanoff leading the way while Barton picks up the rear. As they make their way to the escape helicopter, the sounds and sights become a blur. The girl covers her ringing ears as she runs out into the snow. Her bare feet pound against the icy ground; she can feel her skin getting numb. As they reach the helicopter, Barton turns and provides cover as Romanoff assists the hostage into the helicopter.

Once they get in and takeoff, Barton grabs a few blankets for the girl.

"What's your name, kid?" Barton asks her as he hands her the blankets.

The girl doesn't answer but takes the blankets and wraps herself up in them. Barton looks to Romanoff for backup, but she shakes her head, insisting they wait to question her later. The girl stares out of the side of the helicopter, her eyes filling with tears as the HYDRA building grows smaller as they fly further away. She shuts her eyes hard, thinking about all the torture and nightmares she was put through. Fear creeps into her mind as she opens her eyes, looking around at the few agents in the helicopter with her, wondering what they'll do with her.
