"So, can you just explain one thing to me?" Beta asked as they were getting ready for day four. Not giving Forte any time to respond, they went on. "You made the argument that we should have separate rooms because you were concerned about the fact that it was possible for an Impostor to be rooming with a crewmate, correct? This kind of concern doesn't just come out of nowhere. Are you concerned that I am an Impostor?"Forte seemed stunned. "I mean, I don't think you are, but then again, no one thinks that they're infected before it's too late so... yeah. It's not against you, specifically, but it's just something that I'm worried about. What if Omega or Odyssey is infected and one kills the other? What am I supposed to do if I see one of them standing over the bloody corpse? They're practically my chosen brothers, Beta. I wouldn't be able to stand it if they died on me, even if it'd mean that I wouldn't have to deal with more arguments."
"Still, this kind of thing doesn't just pop up in a random thought bubble."
"Well, maybe it wasn't a random thought bubble, okay?" Forte shouted. He kept his gaze away from Beta, focused on his gloves. "Maybe it was because I have had this line of thought before and it has opened back up now that people are actually getting killed! I don't know, half of the crew might be dead by the next morning. We both know that the captain is most likely going to die, no matter what Cinnabar says, and that Odyssey's vulnerable during his long hours in the kitchen, and don't even get me started on you and Petri!"
Beta blinked, overwhelmed by the amount of information that Forte had on all of them. "That... that is kind of stalker-ish information, isn't it?"
"Well Lab is connected to MedBay, isn't it?" Forte demanded waving his hands in a way that was not reassuring Beta.
"So, you're saying that you were trying to open the doors?" Beta asked. "While Petri and I were inside? If that isn't stalkerish, then I don't know what is."
"It's easier to get out that way than going through Decon," Forte said defensively.
Beta raised an eyebrow. Not that Forte could see it, since they were putting their helmet on and he was facing the wall. "Okay. I just wanted to clarify... things."
Forte sighed. "Yeah, okay. I'm sorry, I'm kind of stressed and on edge."
"It's fine. Like Petri said, we're all stressed. Who wouldn't be?"
"No one," Forte said, letting out a little laugh. "I mean, I'm pretty sure the most stressed is the Impostor themself. Trying to keep it together and not kill the rest of the crew, I mean."
======
"Hey, do you have those pit readings yet?" Petri asked.
"Shoot," Beta replied, placing the test tubes down and glancing around Lab. They noted that the door to Lab was indeed locked before grabbing their tablet. "I don't think so. Sorry, I was trying to sort these anomalies."
Petri waved a hand. "That's fine. Just... can you do that now?"
"You don't even have to ask."
Beta walked out of Lab, past the drill, and past a weather node before getting the weird feeling of being stalked. They stopped and looked around, but didn't see anyone. Strange. They shook the feeling off and made it to the platform right before the lava pit. This area always gave Beta an unsettling feeling. Like, if you take a wrong step, you could die.
Apparently people were yeeted off the edge when they were ejected. So that did nothing to reassure Beta's fears.
"Just get the readings, just get the readings," they muttered to themselves. In just a few moments, the data was on their tablet and Beta turned around...
