Holy chakk, everyone, Beneath the Ice is finally finished! I mean, I might come out with an epilogue in the Q&A session, but for now, it's finished!EDIT: As of October 21st, an Epilogue has been published.
(Go check out that Q&A session, though. If it's anything like OaC's, it gonna be filled with chaos and fun as well as answers to any other questions you may have. Maybe even some bonus scenes, I don't know.)
Okay, so when I first started to write this, I actually had a very different vision of where this story was going. For one, Odyssey lived in the first draft and he quit MIRA shortly after the mission to start his own restaurant. For another, I never had the ghosts interact with the living crewmembers, and to everyone's knowledge, Clasher was still the anti-social, gruff, imposing Security Officer that everyone thought he was at the beginning of the story.
Also, I didn't really have anyone's backstories written out. I just told the story through Clasher's point of view and no one ever got a glimpse into anyone else's head. I mean, I came up with everyone else's backstories after or during the time that I was writing the story.
The next draft consisted of more chaos, and that is still unfinished. Literally, I stopped when Forte started to loose control and just never came back to it. It's just in my google drive, slowly getting pushed to the bottom of the screen. It's cringy and honestly, I'm not sure if I'm ever gonna look at it again (same with the first draft, to be perfectly honest. I mean, maybe I'll edit/publish them someday, although I don't think that'll EVER happen...)
The third draft was this one, and I only had a rough line of what would happen. Initially it would have been a lot like the first draft, where Odyssey lived and mourned the loss of his two best friends, but then I realized that even if he had lived, he would have lived a half-life, always seeing his friends in everything else in his life.
So I killed him, and of course he died at the hands of his own friend. Sure, that stung, but Odyssey came to terms with that and accepted the fact that it was out of Forte's control and just hoped for the best.
I had some second thoughts about killing Forte, but honestly, if Forte had lived, he would have constantly been bickering with Dax about what to do and would have loathed him for the rest of time.
So he died and we were left with the emotionally damaged captain, the other symbiont/commander, a confused security officer, and exasperated medical officer, and an overthinking and anxious scientist.
Again, I never intended for anyone else's backstory to be referenced except for Clasher's, Petri's and a little bit of Cinnabar's, but when I wrote Justice and Indigo, I began to wonder what made them who they were and eventually came up with their backstories. Then I went and did that with every other character until everyone's backstory was written out. It made it a bit hard when I started killing people off, but it made the story much more realistic (I did the same thing for OaC, so that was great...)
Then came in the ghosts. Okay, maybe the story could have progressed without them, but I don't think any parent would just abandon their kid after they died if they could still be around. Wren in particular would have been livid if Petri died and she wasn't around to try to protect him.
Anything else? Oh yeah, the actual setting. I know that this is mostly based on lore from Among Us, with the map, the spacesuits, and the terminology, but I added my own twists and tried for a more realistic feel, hence the murders and grief, and all that jazz. I hope you didn't mind, but if you did, I think you would have stopped reading after the first three chapters...
Again, a big thanks to everyone who went through this with me and to anyone reading this who read the first version! You guys are the best! Drink water, eat food, sleep through the night!
