I made my way through the front doors of the school and headed straight for the lake where I hoped Daphne would be waiting. She seemed like she knew a lot about the students that go here, which came as no surprise. From what I gathered her group - Katherine, Josiah, and her - were pretty popular at Montre. They were like a trio of extremely well-put-together teens, like the kind you'd see grace the CW. So there was no doubt that she would have answers to my questions.
It was getting pretty dark since the weather today - like every other day here - wasn't too good so I swiftly followed the pathway through the forest until I made it to the lake but to my dismay, she wasn't there yet. I pulled out my phone and checked the time, it was exactly 4:25 pm and school let out 30 minutes ago.
Taking in a breath I sat down on a rock that had been perfectly placed next to a tree, somewhere to sit and relax I thought to myself as I pulled out a book from my tote back. I never leave my room without one, you never know when you might need to lose yourself in a good story. On today's list, we had Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding. Aunt Lily bought me all four books in the series one Christmas and I finished them all in the space of 2 weeks. I'm a sucker for a good book plus reading would pass the time until Daphne got here.
By the time I made it to chapter 10 Daphne was still not here, 5:30 I looked down at the time on my phone and sighed. I thought that she was willing to help me but I guess not. I grabbed my bag, placed my book inside and made my way back towards the school when all of a sudden a heard an animalistic growl coming from deep inside the woods. My heart skipped a beat as I slowly turned and analyzed my surroundings but saw nothing. I was about to continue walking when I heard it again, but this time it was a lot closer.
I steadied my breathing, holding onto the straps of my bag so that the shaking in my hands would stop but it didn't, instead the nerves made their way through my body. My heart was beating so uncontrollably that my head began to ache. Then I heard it and I froze, it was breathing so heavily that I could hear each time it drew in a breath. So raw, so animalistic were the sounds coming from the forest that I wondered what It could possibly be.
You need to run. Move. Now.
There was only one thought in my mind and that was to get away. I bit down on my bottom lip so hard that I think I might have drawn blood. I needed the pain to distract myself so that I would move. I need to move.
It was like I knew I was running but I wasn't fully there, my mind was on overdrive and my feet took the wheel. I sped down the trail like my life depended on it - maybe it did - I could feel my chest began to tighten as I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, whisking through the trees trying to focus my attention on where I was going.
My heart was beating too loud for me to hear anything and it all came to a stop once I hit the ground with a loud thud. My head was spinning and my hands and knees were on fire. I looked around through glossy eyes to see that my feet were caught in a few vines that were all muddled up on the ground as I attempted to pick myself back up again but then the growling suddenly stopped. I looked up to see a figure hiding itself in between the trees. It looked like a wolf, but that couldn't be because it was the size of a bear.
The animal stared at me for what felt like hours but then in a flash it disappeared back into the forest as if it were never even there to begin with.
What the hell was that? And just like that, more questions came flooding through my head.
Still seated on the cold ground I pulled the vines off my feet, whilst attempting to calm myself down in the process. In all my years I have never seen something like that before. A wolf the size of a bear.
