Our solemn oaths to hunt down a dragon
were made many months ago.
The day of the dragon's coming
began as any day
but ended with villages aflame.
The silent dead lay beneath red skies;
smoke drifted skyward; ash rained down.
Heart-rending songs of grief filled the air,
sung for the lost and fallen.
I was but one
of a courageous band of companions
that on that day
began a quest.
Months have since passed,
and we have traveled a distance
greater than ever before.
Today is our day,
which we have sought
these many months.
Once distant, but now within hand's reach,
a mountain ledge
rests before a cave's entrance
beneath a foreboding mountain's peak
grasping at the sun.
The valley far below-
sunshine at its heart, reflecting off autumn's leaves
and lost on flowers glowing purple, blue, and gold.
At last, it is found.
Will we succeed?
Will we return home,
to loved ones, to laughing,
to quiet sunny afternoons?
Red eyes appear in the deep darkness
of the cursed cave.
Behold, the great snake with wings;
a terror of flight, whose footsteps are earthquakes,
whose breath is death.
The Dragon.
