Marc's jaw clenched as he looked at you. Anger burned behind his eyes. You weren't quite sure if it was because of you or because of the near-death experience you suffered from. His chest shook at he breathed, the rage still simmering below the surface, Marc exercising a considerable amount of effort to keep it at bay. And you certainly hadn't helped the situation. "Say that again," he seethed. "I dare you."
"...you didn't have to be the hero this time. I could've saved myself," you repeated. It was hard to keep your voice strong. Marc's withering gaze made you want to shrink into yourself. You had always known he was an intimidating man, but that intimidation was always directed at other people. Never at you.
He took a step closer to you, using every inch of his height to tower over you. "It's my responsibility to keep you safe."
"I can handle myself," you insisted. "I took care of myself just fine before you came along. You didn't need to step in and get yourself hurt."
"I can heal easily. You can't."
His tone was so matter-of-fact it almost made you drop the argument entirely. But you couldn't. He'd bruised your ego, implied that you couldn't take care of yourself, and that hurt more than any potential wound you could have gotten.
You rolled your eyes, practically scoffing. "The worst that could have happened was a flesh wound. Would've bled a little, but would have been patched up real quick. You, on the other hand? You jumping in front of me resulted in a much more serious injury! You can't just do that, Marc! I don't want to see you get hurt on my account—"
Marc surged forward, taking your face in his hands, pulling your lips toward his. Your words died in your throat, instinctively leaning into the kiss, your arms snaking around his neck, your fingers entangling themselves in his hair.
When he pulled away, his eyes had softened. He gently nudged your nose with his, his voice barely above a whisper as he said, "You can be mad at me all you want. I'm doing this to protect you. Okay? I'm doing this to protect you, because I love you. I don't care that you wouldn't have been hurt too badly. I don't want you to be hurt at all."
"Marc—"
"I have so few good things in my life, and you're the best damn thing I have. So forgive me if I'm a little overbearing at times, if I accidentally undermine you. I just don't want to lose you. I can't lose you. Okay? I can't fucking lose you. I can't."
"I'm not going to leave you, Marc. You know that." You carded your fingers through his hair, nuzzling your nose against his. "I appreciate you protecting me, I do. But, please, baby, understand me when I say that I know my limits. I know what I can handle. And if there is ever a moment that I know I can't take it, I'll let you know. Okay? Because, even if you got this superhuman healing ability going for you right now, that doesn't mean I like the image of you being shot because of me."
"I'll be better, baby" Marc swore. "I'm sorry."
"I forgive you," you said. "Now, c'mon. I think we've earned a nice dinner after this, yeah? My treat."
"I think I should be the one treating you," Marc said, a teasing lilt in his voice.
"You already got shot for me. Let me treat you, baby."
"Hmm, fine," he conceded. "But I get to pick dessert."
You laughed lightly. "And I look forward to your choice."
"Good, because this is the kinda dessert that takes all night to be thoroughly appreciated."
