Steven felt like his heart jumped out of his chest when he heard your confession. Were you serious? Were you genuine? He...He couldn't believe this. "You...you love me?" he repeated, making sure he heard you right.
"I do," you said.
"But you...You said you wouldn't fall in love with you."
And you had. Long ago, when you met Steven, he was still struggling with the whole Marc and Jake situation. Back then, the two of you had gone on a couple of dates. You thought things had gone well, but Steven...He was scared to let anyone in. He tried to break things off, but you insisted that you could be friends. He agreed, but he made you promise that you wouldn't fall in love and he would do the same. That had been easy enough, the promise, you mean. But not falling in love with a man as sweet as Steven...That was a whole other ball game.
"...I lied," you said. "Look, you don't need to do anything. We don't need to act on this. You don't even have to love me back. But I couldn't keep this from you anymore."
Steven spared a glance at his reflection in Gus's tank, before looking back to you. He shook his head. "I can't do this. I think you need to go, love."
"Excuse me?" you repeated.
"You...You can't love me. I can't let you love me," he said. "I-I should have realized this sooner. I'm sorry. I just...This isn't good. For you. For us."
"Steven, please—"
He looked away from, refusing to meet your eyes. "I-I know this hurts. But, it's better in the long run. Believe me."
You felt tears pricking at your eyes, and you prayed that they wouldn't spill over. You didn't want to cry. Couldn't. Not now. "Is that really what you want?"
He nodded.
"...Fine. But don't come looking for me once you realize the mistake you're making. That you're throwing away a friend over this, over something we could easily move on from. When I walk through that door, I don't ever want to hear from you again. Am I clear?"
"Crystal."
And so, you left. And you prayed that you would never see him again. Because, if you did, your heart would surely break.
