the rest of the week flew by in a haze. wooyoung wrote his art history midterm and actually did okay on it (well... he passed at least). the studying really helped. other than that, he had numerous assignments and other tests to work on. at the end of term, everything just seemed to be due at the same time. just a couple more weeks until winter break and he would finally be able to relax.
even with his busy schedule, every night san would text him. sometimes they just said hi through messages, other times san would face time with him until he fell asleep. wooyoung began looking forward to their nighttime conversations – it was the best part of his day and made the endless hours of classes he suffered through far less painful.
before he knew it, it was saturday. the day of the double date.
mingi had been rambling on about the skate date all week, and by the time he and wooyoung went to pick up yunho, he was practically skipping down the sidewalk like an overgrown toddler in his puffy black winter jacket.
"mingi! walk slower!" wooyoung complained, basically running to keep up with mingi's long strides. it had snowed the night before and wooyoung was petrified of slipping on the ice-covered sidewalk.
the tall man ignored his complaints. "hurry up! i don't wanna be late!"
they were going to meet yunho at his apartment then walk over to the skating rink together. yeosang lived on the other side of town, so he said he would just meet them there, which left wooyoung to third wheel for a little while.
yunho's building was in a nicer student housing area – or at least, it didn't have metal bars over the windows and decaying roof shingles falling from the eaves like their apartment complex did. mingi scurried right up to the front door and texted his date that they were there. not even a minute later, yunho appeared out front and scurried over towards the duo.
oh my god, he's a puppy. wooyoung grinned when he saw him. yunho was even taller than mingi, with light brown hair covered with a pale green knit tuque. when mingi leaned over and gave him a tiny kiss on the cheek, his face erupted into the biggest most pure smile wooyoung had ever seen and his face got all rounded as he blushed.
"hi," mingi told him, staring at the brunette with adoring eyes.
"hi," yunho said back.
"hi," mingi repeated.
wooyoung giggled. they were so in love.
finally, mingi remembered that wooyoung existed and that he should probably introduce them.
"yunho- this is wooyoung, my best friend. and wooyoung... this is my yunho."
wooyoung smiled at him. "hi, nice to-"
wooyoung didn't have a chance to finish his sentence because yunho had literally picked him up off the ground and hugged him.
"it's so great to meet you! mingi talks about you all the time!"
"oh h-he does?" wooyoung was still trying to regain his balance as yunho put him back down.
"he only said good things though!" yunho quickly assured him. "i feel like i already know you."
mingi laughed and took yunho's hand in his. "you better not steal my best friend away yuyu."
"i make no promises," he giggled.
the trio began to walk the distance to the skating rink. it wasn't too far from campus. wooyoung immediately felt comfortable with yunho and the couple even made an effort to include him in the conversation – which was well appreciated. yunho was a student as well, in his third year of a veterinary science degree.
wooyoung noticed that the two tall men held hands all the way to the rink. i want that with someone, wooyoung thought to himself, staring down at his mittened hand as a little bit of jealousy set in. they were just so cute together.
yeosang was waiting when they arrived. he looked just as pretty as always, wrapped up in a beige overcoat and matching burberry scarf, but as wooyoung got closer he noticed a hint of annoyance flash over his face when he noticed them.
"hi yeosang!" wooyoung waved and happily jogged over with yunho and mingi following a little ways behind him. "you're here already."
"no, i'm a hologram." he rolled his eyes, not bothering to glance up from his phone screen.
"uh-" wooyoung looked at him for a second. "is everything alright?"
finally, the blonde stuffed his phone into his pocket and stood up. "you're late."
"oh."
it had taken a little longer to walk to the ice rink than they had expected. wooyoung quickly checked the time on his own phone. it was only 5 minutes past the time they agreed to meet. his eyes floated back up to yeosang, perplexed by his annoyance. "sorry?"
he shrugged again. "whatever let's not talk about it."
that's weird. wooyoung frowned. it's only five minutes. that's not a big deal right?
when the tall men joined them, they both immediately greeted yeosang kindly. yeosang's personality suddenly flipped back to the usual upbeat nature that wooyoung was more used to, and he took wooyoung's hand, holding it tight in his.
"hi, you must be mingi," he grinned. "and... yunho, right?"
"yeah that's right!" mingi exclaimed. "i was so happy when you decided to come skating with us."
"thanks for inviting me. i haven't skated in forever and i was really excited to meet some of wooyoung's friends."
wooyoung stood quietly as they introduced themselves, fixated on the grip yeosang had on his hand. he wasn't even holding his hand back, but it didn't seem to matter to yeosang. wooyoung wasn't sure how he felt about it – and about yeosang's sudden change in attitude. he was talking as if they were already boyfriends or something, which made him a little uneasy since that wasn't a discussion they had had with one another yet.
i'm worrying about nothing. wooyoung tried to shake off the discomfort. he didn't want to make the day awkward for yunho and mingi who looked like they were having the times of their lives together. yeosang's not a bad guy. he reminded himself. and mingi seems to like him too.
the group went and rented their skates. yeosang paid for all of them, which seemed to impress mingi and yunho even more, and then they all sat at the edge of the rink to put on their skates.
the taller couple took turns helping each other put on the skates and grinning stupidly at each other like two adorable teenagers enjoying their first ever crush.
wooyoung side glanced at yeosang, who had already slipped on his skates by himself.
"hurry up," he told wooyoung as he stepped onto the ice, nodding down to the skates that wooyoung was struggling to tie up tight enough. "i'm going to go warm up."
"alright." wooyoung watched him skate off easily. he sighed once the man was out of earshot. so much for the romantic date he was expecting. it almost seemed like yeosang didn't want to hang out with him at all.
maybe i was expecting too much, he sighed.
he tightened his skates and wobbled off onto the ice rink, trying to catch up with his date while ignoring the disappointment that was gradually setting under his skin.
