Just for a few examples of the ridiculous things they 'fought' about, all of them were about words and pronunciations. Anna thought about joking with the jumper, but she never actually did because deep inside she didn't wanted to give it back. After some more desperate attempts to get noticed by the counselors, they got called to their offices.
"Yes!" They heartened, high-fiving each other with a smile. But as soon as they entered, their smiles faded away.
"Okay, what is all this about?" Monica asked, sitting them on chairs in front of them.
"The what? What did we do now?" Cody asked.
"Rivalry like this does not come up from one day to another, you're clearly staging this."
"Oh my Go— Stop, this is so dumb. We just found our differences, aren't we allowed to?" Anna did as they had agreed.
"Of course not! You're agents! Partners, you're not supposed to act like enemies."
"You won't let us be friends, you won't let us discuss, what do you want from us?" She exploded.
But what they didn't know is that it was part of their plan, they needed to know if it was being believable or not, depending on that they would keep on or be more subtle. "We just want you to get along like... Agents! Professionally!" Monica responded
"But we can't. We're not professionals, we're teenagers." To which Anna explained in a more calmed tone.
"As much as it hurts me to agree with her, she's right." Cody pointed.
"Ugh... Bugger off" She recalled an insult she had heard with friends she made in the academy and copied it in a derogatory tone.
"You mean fu—"
"No I don't!" They ended the meeting understanding that there was nothing they could do about it, they couldn't make them stop, because they wouldn't get take them out of character, even if they were absolutely convinced that it was an act, which they weren't. And after not getting anything from them, they were released.
After the closure they had on this subject, they continued with their little rivalry, Anna arguing that America was a spoiled version of England, while Cody said that America was the people defined by freedom. To the point that at meals they were left alone so as not to listen to their fights, unconsciously giving them time to be alone, together.
But one lunch in specific, something was born in Cody. "Annabelle?" A man with a scar on his eye got to them, he had a file on his hands.
"Yeah" She nodded, receiving the document.
"This is the information you asked for"
"Oh I... I—" Anna looked at Cody, he looked confused and a little scared. She pursed her lips, making a choice. "I never asked for information."
"It says here for... Annabelle Eaton, are you her?"
"Yes I am, but—"
"Then it's yours" He said walking away.
Annabelle doubted for a second, Cody offered to find out the truth about the mysterious file, but after insisting quite a long time, Anna stood up from the table and walked away. Saying that she had something to do. Only then Cody remembered something he had heard say a long time ago, every laugh and joke has a truth hidden behind.
He didn't wanted to believe his own theories, but his mind had made it for a reason, his brain was only trying to tie the trail loose ends that she had left behind. He couldn't blame himself or his sin for finding a way to make her guilty of things he didn't know about, but he could learn the truth. If his heart and hunch were true, he would find nothing about her, nothing shady, nothing bad, she would be the girl he knew she could be.
