For some people, every day is the same. Once you develop a routine, it sticks. For others, the chaos of not knowing what comes next is the best part of their day.

Luna Jennings belonged to the latter group.

Her job was chaotic—predictably so. But she never expected anything less. This job kept her on her toes, and it wasn't like she didn't already have her guard up. Being a woman was hard. Being a woman with immense power? That pissed off just about every sexist piece of scum in existence.

Today, however, sexism wasn't the issue at hand.

Instead, it was a domestic call—a woman locked in a bathroom while a man banged aggressively on the door. Luna and her partner, Athena, arrived on the scene, eyes sharp, hands ready.

"Bloody hell, go away!" the woman shouted from inside.

"Sir, hands in the air," Athena commanded, her voice firm. "Hands in the air, now!"

The man turned toward them, relief washing over his face—until he realized he was being detained.

"Oh, good—" He cut himself off, confusion setting in. "What? What the hell are you doing?"

Luna had already cuffed him before he could protest further.

"Look, I didn't do anything, okay?" he said, voice rising in panic.

"All right, we'll sort this out later," Luna replied, handing him off to Linsey, the other officer on scene.

As he was dragged away, he yelled over his shoulder, "There's something wrong with my wife!"

Luna and Athena exchanged a glance before Athena knocked on the door.

"Miss? LAPD. Are you all right?" Athena's voice softened. "Your husband is out of the house. You're safe."

The door cracked open, revealing a frazzled woman with wide eyes. She took a cautious step forward, scanning the room.

"It's okay," Athena reassured her. "Everything's fine now."

The woman exhaled heavily. "I don't know what set him off. He's acting absolutely bonkers. I mean, we have a row every fortnight or so—he'll go spare, do his nut—but never like this."

As she spoke, she hiccupped violently, gasping for air between each one.

Luna and Athena exchanged another look.

"Sit down," Athena instructed, guiding the woman to the bed.

Luna crouched beside her. "Those are some world-class hiccups."

"I know," the woman groaned. "It's so embarrassing. I woke up at half nine with a migraine, had a spot of tea, and they just started. An hour later, I can't get rid of them."
