"Alison can you hear me?" Sammy asked, placing a cool hand on her clammy forehead. Kneeling down next to her on the bed. "Loud and clear" she grumbled, curled up in a tight ball on her side. the pain all to much.

pulling back the bed sheets, he noticed they were wet. Her water must have broken recently " Contractions?" He asked pushing her gently onto her back, she screamed at the contraction that crashed like a wave in her stomach.

Panting she tried to find comfort in her new position, but the pain In her back wasn't making it easy. "Are you a doctor?" She giggled, always using comedy to lighten a situation. That was Ali always happy and positive.

Sammy couldn't help but chuckle as he helped bend her legs at the knee , only Ali would be cracking Jokes while in labour with no pain killers. "I'm going to have a look" he informed her climbing into the end of the bed.

He placed his hands on her knees "Open your legs Ali" he softly commanded, instantly regretting his choice of words. She lifted her head to look down at him over her bump and knees. "Seen as you asked so nicely this time" she smiled doing as she was told.

Her night dress wasn't doing much to cover her anyway, with her bump making the hem sit a lot higher than usual.

Sammy took a deep breath. He was use to being under pressure with once being a surgeon. But delivering a baby? This was out of his comfort zone and expertise. He wouldn't admit to her that he was scared.

Alison was only twenty four weeks pregnant. There wasn't time to get her to the nearest hospital that was miles away or get better qualified help. All he could do was pray.

Her contractions got longer and more frequent, the pain intensifying with every scream she gave "It's time for you to push on your next contraction Ali" Sammy said calmly, one hand resting on her thigh, the other reaching under her leg to hold her hand.

"Since when have you been a midwife?!" She screamed, the fear now setting in. The reality of her being a mother so soon sinking in. "Since my best friend went into labour" he smiled giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.

The next contraction hit as she pushed, using every ounce of energy she had. Sammy praised her with every push. "One more Ali, your doing amazing!" He praised letting go of her hand, to help the new born into the world.

With a final push and scream, it was over. Alison panted a sigh of relief that it was all over.
"Sammy?" She asked sitting up the best she could. His eyes were full of tears and Sammy never cries. The tiny infant held against his bare chest. She hand no idea when he took his shirt off. His last attempt of keeping her alive.

"I'm sorry Ali" he apologised "No, no. Sammy do something!!" She cried, one hand over her mouth, an attempt of keeping the build up of bile down.

"There's nothing I can do Ali" he said sadly, Ali let out a bloody curdling scream. Sammy held on to the little girl as if she was his own.

Alison stared at the wall ahead of her, a numb feeling creeping over her body. She felt the bed dip beside side and Sammy's body rest against hers.

The tiny infant wrapped up in a blanket cradled in her arms, she placed her head on his shoulder. The click of a camera somewhere in the distance.

The only memory she has of her family

"Ali?" Sammy asked concerned, as he sat next to her. she had been sat on the beach alone for the last half an hour, watching as the waves crashed onto the beach. "Do you wish she was here?" Alison blurted out with out thinking.

Her memories still plaguing her dreams. Sammy sighed, he knew listening to Ari talking about children dying was going to bring back memories.
