Luke

I was standing with my two best friends and our new addition. Courtney McAllister and Adora Todd were the non-strangers.

Adora and I could never settle Courtney down, but she was sweet. Besides, I knew her acting wasn't anything out of the ordinary. She'd been acting like that since she was five and learned to talk.

She also wore her mask proudly with all the zodiac signs, and would always joke about our signs dating, because she always joked like that. I hoped she'd never change, and she hadn't so far.

Today something seemed off. Maybe it's me worrying about crap more and more because of the pandemic, but she'd inform me if she started with the purple shoe she was worried. She tapped fifty times today and all of them started with purple.

Was something wrong with her?

I didn't know, but I swallowed my worry due to not wanting to ask Courtie. Adora on the other hand was as peaceful as can be. Then the bell rings. Courtney takes off with me trailing behind.

I figure that my eyes are a stormy hazel, cause I'm worried.

I say, "Wait up Courtie! This isn't a raceeeee!!"

But my voice trails off as she runs faster, signifying she heard me. She doesn't like to wait. Especially when someone tells her to.

Her curls bounce off at her shoulders as she lets me catch up.

She giggles and says, "You gotta admit, that was FUNNY!"

I laugh along and say, "Yes, yes that was very funny."

She taps for the fifty first time and this is the only time she starts with yellow.

She says, "And like this girl told me that she had a crush on this dude and he was like RIGHT there! And I started dying of laughter and then they started making out and I was like EW!!"

I laugh HARD. She's laughing too.

She looks at me with her dark green eyes and says, "Race you to class!"

We race until we find our homeroom, for which we have to stay in since Covid.  The class room smelled strongly of hand sanitizer, and I see the desks were rearranged.

I'm somehow STILL next to Courtney. Courtney's name tag reads, Courtney I. McAllister.

Mine reads Luke B. Duncan, and neither of us took them off since we liked the neatness, even though neatness is definitely not in Courtney's point of view. Not even close.

Adora

I walked into my class and noticed the seating was different. I was all the way across the room from Courtney and Luke, and I didn't mind since they were in front and center. I was all the way in the back.

Then the library cart rolled in and started calling random names, not caring if we ordered books or had any to check in. I check out Hello Universe, which is my favorite book, and I notice Virgil is more like me each time I read it.

I'm forced to close it when I see Courtney. She looks like she's about to set something on fire, but no, this is how she gets my attention.

Courtney's at my desk saying, "You wanna hear the story of when my parents and their friends were all, like, making out?"

I say, "You don't think that's messed up?"

She says, "No, it's like really funny!"

Luke literally has to grab her arm and lead her back to her seat..but then I notice his eyes. They're stormy hazel. Something is wrong.
