The Fourth of July in Covington is apparently all about traditions. Milan decks out the whole house, the dads come up for the weekend, the boys steam clams and shoot off fireworks. All the other Fourth of Julys, I spent them with my mother while she was sick and watched fireworks with her outside a hospital window. But the last Fourth of July I spent changed my life for all I know. And I don't know what this years Fourth has planned.

"Can I finish your milk?" Keoni asks.

I realized over the weeks of spending time here with Keoni is that he loves to drink milk. Other peoples milk to be exact.

I laugh. "Here" I slide him my milk bowl and he gulps it down in a matter of seconds.

"Gross, Oni" Miyu said.

"Yo, I'm gonna go wash the clams." Nico said walking over to Keoni who was drinking milk. "Did you get the lighter fluid?"

"Mm. It's already on the beach." Keoni said.

"Are we done with the portrait yet?" Akio asks while walking into the kitchen with Milan following behind him.

"For today." She says. "But you do look pretty good in a dress shirt Akio. Uh, which makes me think if Lani doesn't hurry up and ask someone to that ball, you should take her."

"Ew. No way." I say.

"No, no, no, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm already going with someone that I've met."

"To the debutante ball?" Nicole comes in.

"Yes."

"As an escort?"

"Wrap your head around it, Mom, all right? She's coming today with Reina and Allie, so you'll meet her." Akio says.

I wonder who the girl is.

"That's wonderful." She says.

"Oh, and don't forget, Ms. Birmingham's first dance rehearsal is tomorrow, so, uh, tick-tock." Milan says tapping her wrist.

"Don't worry Milan. She will find someone. I'm sure she already has a special boy in mind." Milan says side-eyeing Keoni.

"I don't know my kids anymore." Nicole said.

"Wait, are you wearing makeup?" Akio points out making all of us to look at her.

She in fact was. She never wears makeup.
