We make camp at a cave nearby.
Danny paces back and forth while Ava frowns, hovering her hand over the golem's face.
"We don't have to bring him back," Danny says.
"I made a promise."
"So? It's not alive. Promise is null and void."
"I don't know what I'm doing," Ava says.
"Good! Let's forget this, then."
"He's made of sand," Charlie says, "you should be able to revive him. Put your hand on his face."
Ava grimaces. "Gross."
"He's not real," Charlie assures. "It's just sand and magic."
She continues grimacing, but puts her hand on its face. She blinks and sits taller. "Whoa."
Charlie's eyes widen. "You feel something?" He drops to his knees beside her. He puts his hand on the golem's face, then frowns. "I don't feel anything."
"You don't?" She asks. "It's like I can feel all this energy in him. It's just... sitting there. Raven, come feel this."
"Charlie couldn't feel anything," I protest.
"Just try," she urges.
I sigh and kneel beside her and Charlie. I tap her hand.
She takes it and presses it to the golem's face.
A jolt runs through my arm like I've touched a live wire.
"I don't feel anything," I mutter.
Ava sighs, "oh. Well. What do I do?"
"You should be able to reignite the energy you feel. It'll restart the magic and wake him up," Charlie says.
Ava frowns. "This feels stupid."
"You can do it," he says, "we believe in you."
She sighs again, "fine." She grinds her teeth together. She's quiet for a few minutes, then growls in frustration. "This isn't doing anything."
The energy inside him is familiar. Like what was bursting out of me in the cavern. It's like I'm on the same wavelength as him. Like I'm vibrating at the same frequency.
I can feel the energy mingling with mine, like two storm fronts meeting to create a hurricane. I can imagine my own energy forcing the sorceress's out. Silver flooding out purple. It flows into him.
Ava yanks her hand back like she touched a stove top. "What was that?"
"What?" I ask, pulling my hand back.
The golem's eyes flare open and he takes a breath, then chokes and coughs. He sits up, hacking.
I smack his back and he lets out a wheeze.
He grabs his throat, taking unsteady breaths.
Danny grimaces and turns away.
"Are you okay?" I ask, rubbing the golem's back.
"I'm alive!" He croaks.
"Yeah, Ava woke you up. How are you feeling?"
"No!" He shouts, wild eyes focusing on me. "I'm alive!"
I nod. "Yeah. You're sand, so we figured Ava could repower you. Are you feeling okay?"
He scrambles for my dagger and we all tense until he puts it to his own fingertip and presses in until the skin breaks and he starts to bleed.
