Beads of sweat dripped from your brow to the slope of your nose as a wave of warm air met your face, escaping from the oven door you were opening. The scent of red velvet cupcakes filled the air as you slipped on midnight green oven mitts, pulling out two trays of cupcakes.
You exhaled as you placed the trays down on the countertops, turning to close the oven door. The sound of the black stainless steel closing shut was a bit louder than you expected, causing you to wince as you glanced at the stairs.
Two weeks had passed since the gala. And the both of you were on edge, bracing for a random moment where you'd be proposed to by the other. But, the moment had arrived for you, finding yourself using the recent holiday celebrations to hide your preparations over the last few days. You also found yourself awake once again absurdly early on a winter morning, just like a year prior on Satoru's birthday.
"Hopefully, he's still sound asleep," you murmured, moving the red velvet cupcakes onto a cooling rack you'd set out earlier. "I need to be quieter."
Worry settled in your chest as you pushed the cupcakes aside, turning your attention to your cluttered kitchen island. Various mixing bowls holding flour, eggs, and other ingredients sat upon the quartz counters, all measured out and grouped according to the parts of the breakfast you were making.
What was the source of your worries? Well, despite the intense amount of effort required to pull this breakfast in bed off, a small thought still lingered in your head, saying it wasn't good enough. You were doing a grand romantic gesture to a well-seasoned veteran, after all. And yes, you knew that it wasn't a competition, and it wasn't the goal to have a "better" proposal. Both of you knew that.
But, you couldn't help but wonder if there was something better you could do. Wonder if you could pack the cupcakes and the ingredients and play it off when Satoru woke up. You just wanted to surprise him. You wanted to see his eyes light up as his hair would still be a wild mess, still groggy from sleep. Really, you wanted the entire gesture to convey how deep and consuming the love you held for this man was. Even if it was just a hint, you needed him to see.
You exhaled, bringing your mitt-covered hands to your cheeks as you looked down at the ingredients you had to work your magic. I can do this, you affirmed yourself, nodding your head. It'll be absolutely perfect. For him, I'll make sure of it.

"I better see tears in his eyes," you grumbled, flipping the last souffle pancake. With the number of times you had to redo the meringue? Satoru's eyes had better be glistening when it came down to it.
You sighed, moving the final pancake onto the platter with the others, its surface jiggling as it landed. You covered them, wanting to collapse against the warm hardwood floors and curl up into a ball and sleep. 7:12, you read the time as you looked at the digital clock above one of the ovens.
Your eyelids were extremely heavy, looking across the island into your living room, an ombre melting from a dark blue to the slightest bits of pink behind the skyscrapers. Expected, as you'd been up for the past one and a half hours, all sorts of flour dusting the baggy T-shirt and shorts you wore.
