{the movie never mentions his age but in the book he's 19 (according to wiki) and the actor who played him was around 19 in the film so I'm making him 19, as for the 'age of favor' y'all can think of why he's still alive lol}

it was mid-day, the hot summer sun beaming onto the top of (y/n)'s head making it uncomfortably hot as she sat outside the small garage-like gas station. she wasn't fond of being forced to come to the shop every day, she had chores that needed to be done "I'll be right back, I'm gonna go use the bathroom" her eyes rose off the rock they were focused on, resting onto her grandpa who was standing next to her "..okay" his hand came up on to her shoulder, brown eyes scanning over the corn field."if you see or hear anything, don't hesitate to scream" it was a hushed whisper as if he was telling her a secret in a room full of people despite them seemingly being the only people for miles but she understood why, there was always an uneasy feeling of when and why the residents of Gatlin would pay them a visit or when they close by, it was better safe than sorry when it came to saying stuff that might anger them "I know pa, I'll be fine" she patted his hand, repositioning her legs as she went back to the book she abandoned to stare out the ground. with the reassurance from his granddaughter, Diehl ventured into the building leaving her alone as sarge followed after him, wanting to stay as close as possible to his owner.
looking down at the inked paper she tried to remember her place on the page, scanning over words and trying to block out the whispers that seemed to grow louder now that she was alone, it sounded more like soft shouts into her ear, like a mother subtly scolding her child in the grocery store for misbehaving.
hearing a stray ting of a pebble hitting the hubcap of her grandpa's project truck she immediately stood, (e/c) eyes darting around as she back towards the door of the gas station, widening when the rusty hood slammed shut. she wanted to shout, she needed to shout for her grandfather but it felt like she was being choked, an invisible force making her throat tighten and mouth dry.
continuing to back up, a slight cry left her mouth when she ran into someone, a hand shooting up from behind her and slamming itself over her mouth as she attempted to scream.
_______________________it had been about a week since they took her, days blurring together due to the adrenaline but as it wore off and the situation became clearer, she began trying to figure out the best thing to do. Isaac had been his usual ominous self, speaking in the same manner as a preacher coercing the pews to blindly follow the faith, rambling about how (y/n) was 'blessed with a gift' and 'chosen by the lord to be a teacher of his words' if she was being honest non of his actual words stuck, just the basics of what he was saying and the fact that if she wanted to live she needed to nod and play along.
========she sat on an upside-down bucket, hands gripping the wet shirt tightly as she raked it up and down on the wash broad while she tried to ignore the ache that began to form in her arms and the burning feeling of malachai's glaring eyes. the past week had been like this, (y/n) doing whatever chores they got assigned to that day and malachai lurking behind them with a glare, not one ounce in his body willing to hide his disagreement with Isaac's treatment of her.
"so..what else are we doing?" 'we' as in her but it didn't take her that long to notice his short temperament when it came to smart remarks or anything he deemed disrespectful, and with that quickly learned knowledge came the sucking up, her thought process being that if she could gain a bit of friendliness on his end he'd stop being so forceful about the odd rules, probably a naive idea but it was worth a shot she guessed.
