Claire:

A sudden jolt makes my head collide with a hard surface, in turn waking me up. I groan and with still closed eyes, rub the sore spot.

"Good, you're up." The voice drifts from not so far up ahead of me. But it's not the words that make my eyes crack open, it's the voice that does.

Through sleep driven hazy eyes I only manage to make out the shape of the two people sitting up front. With a few hard blinks, everything clears up.

In a panic of understandable fear, instantly I scrunch up farther in my seat of the car I'm traveling in. "Wow. I guess you travel to the afterlife by car nowadays." My mumble doesn't go unnoticed and the girl, Braeden, turns around in her seat.

"For the last time you're not dead." I briefly remember her telling me that back when they showed up at my front door. She notices my reluctance to accept her words so she leans a bit back -- and pinches my leg.

The pain is immediate and I jolt away with wide eyes. "Um, ow!"

"See. Not dead. So stop thinking we are too." She gestures between her and the driver before turning to face the front again.

I rub my leg and frown upon spotting the dusty, barren road the car is currently on. "Okay, well, now that that's established where the heck am I?"

"Just picking up a couple of strays." The male voice chips in. My head whips around so quickly that I'm surprised it's still in place.

"Still not believing it huh, Clairissa." He laughs, making my stomach twist into knots. And not in the good way it use to.

Before I can process a thought to say something in return, the car pulls to a halt. What had been purely an empty road a few moments ago, now appears to be a few miles away from a cluster of buildings.

The car's hidden quite meticulously, leaving me to believe that we're really not suppose to be here. "Looks like a walk in the park." He speaks up upon looking away from the pair of binoculars in his hand.

Braeden hums in agreement before putting her own set away. My heart starts to race in fear. These people are going to make lampshades out of my skin and bury the rest of me out here.

I cringe at my own thought. Really shouldn't have watched that horror movie last night, even if it was just ten minutes of it.

But if I've managed to somehow survive all that I've been through up till now, then there's no way I'm dying out here.

As quietly as possible I inch my hand closer and closer to the door handle. "Alright it's my turn. So stay here and make sure she doesn't go out and get herself killed." Braeden remarks, making my hand stop right on the handle.

Darn.

She leaves hurriedly upon grabbing a gun from the trunk of the car. My eyes stay situated on the seat infront of me. The car goes silent, making me long for the company of Breaden despite her being almost a complete stranger to me. It doesn't matter seeing as how suffocated I feel being stuck here with just him.

"This is awkward." His relaxed tone fills up the silence we were siting in.

That's it I'm out of here. I jimy open the handle and quickly rush out of the car. The sound of the driver side door opening has me moving quicker through the dirt covered road.

"What the hell! Do you have a death wish or something, Clairissa?" The harsh whisper reaches my ear quicker then I want, and a hand is pulling me to a halt.

At the sound of the name he uses I can't stop from turning around angrily. "It's Claire. Not Clairissa. She disappeared the same time that Jace left." I snap harshly. The tone surprises me along with Jason whos hand stays in place.
