Laney POV
"Talk to me." Jory whined as I walked down the sidewalk that night.
"Stop talking to me before the Feds start questioning you." I pushed her away from me and tried picking up my pace.
"I love you Laney." She whispered my name. I stopped walking and looked at her. She's my fucking sister for gods sake.
"I love you more than I could even explain. What I need you to do is just chill okay? I'm leaving for Florida in the morning." I said. She started crying like a big baby.
"That's not fare." She crossed her arms stubbornly.
"Life isn't fare." I started to walk away. She began following me again.
"I want to go." She sounded like a little sister trying to follow the big sister everywhere she go.
"I promise I'm coming back." We were now outside my apartment building.
"No you're not. You probably get caught or get killed." She held on to me for dear life.
"I'm gone be good Jory." I told her. To be honest I don't know what's gone happen to me.
"How do I know that?" Tears were running down her face. I wanted to cry but I couldn't for some reason.
"Just pray.." I shrugged. I walked into my building leaving her outside to look stupid.
I passed by the old lady that's always speaking to me. She was sweeping outside her door.
"Hey Mya." She smiled.
"Hey Ms. Roger." I never broke stride.
"You hungry?" She asked me.
"No ma'am I ate." I lied. Right as I said that my stomach started growling.
"Don't lie to me now child. Now get your butt in here and get some of this chicken and rice." She ordered. I stared at the woman for a minute before walking in her apartment.
Her apartment was so old fashioned. It reminded me of somebody's grandma's house.
I looked at the picture on her wall. It was a young picture of her in her thirties and a beautiful teenage girl.
"Who is this?" I pointed to the picture.
"Me and my daughter, Connie." She said while never looking up. Its like she knew what picture I was talking about.
"I ain't know you had children." I sat at the table and started eating.
"She died in a car wreck and drop that food!" She slapped my hand.
"Ouch!" I snapped.
"Now bow your head and act like you got some home training!" She fussed. I slowly bowed my head and she grabbed my hands.
"Now pray." She told me.
"Bless the food we are about to receive..." That was the only thing I could think of. I opened my eyes and looked up at Ms. Rogers. She looked at me and let my hands go.
"That's all I could think of." I said kind of embarrassed that I couldn't pray. She gave me a sympathetic nod.
"I understand baby. Take it one day at a time." She said while fixing her food.
"Can I fix some juice?" I asked.
"Of course you can. Bring me a glass back." She smiled at me. I feel so comfortable and so....loved by Ms. Rogers. ❤️
