We sat on the river bank until dusk in each other's arms. My phone buzzed again it was my mama. I answered this time.
"Hey, mama. "
"Did Luke find you he's been worried sick Delila! And Hank Williams! He's the worst horse to take!"
"Mama Luke's here with me, he's been with me for an hour or so. I'm sorry to worry you. I love you."
"Ok well, Jess stopped by to get Ben. She mentioned you all were going to The Brand J this evening y'all better come back and get showered."
I looked over at Luke laying on the grass. He looked so peaceful as he was holding onto my ankle while I talked.
"Ok, we'll be back soon then."
I hung up and sighed putting my phone back in my pocket. That's when I realized I had forgotten to read my letter. I stuffed it deep into my pocket and turned to Luke.
"I guess we're going out tonight?"
He moaned and gave a grumpy face. "Let me guess Jess wants to go to The Brand J?"
I giggled "yup".
He rolled his eye and grabbed me pulling me on top of him.
"Are we ever gonna get to have this talk? I have so much to say to you Dela Blue." He rubbed his hands over my hips. Gazing at every inch of me until he made it up to my eyes. "I meant what I said, I chose you, Dela, I love you."
His words made my heart jolt. I leaned down and kissed him. I whispered in his ear, "I love you too Luke, but if we don't go now we will never put clothes on again."
We both hesitated to get up. We stared so intensely at each other getting dressed.
I went over and hopped on Hank Williams and Luke grabbed the reins from me walking him back to his truck. "You know Hank is the wildest horse I've got in the barn? No one rides him but me."
I smiled at Luke, "And now me. Follow me back to the house?"
"You're extremely stubborn you know that Dela?" He was looking up at me smiling when he said it.
I shrugged my shoulders smiling again, "But you love me Luke." and I told Hank to run!
"Holy smokes Dels if you weren't doing Luke again I'd do ya! You look hot!" Jess practically yelled as I walked down the stairs into my mother's kitchen.
My mother laughed and rolled her eyes at Jess walking off to the living room with a cup of Tea. "You girls are gonna drive those boys crazy tonight! Don't be getting thrown in jail either Delila!"
I laughed at them, pouring myself a glass of wine. Fully showered in a black sequin tank top, 7 Jeans with sequins on the butt pockets, and my black Tommy Lama boots. I was feeling sexy and I was going to make sure Luke's eyes were only on me this evening. It has been so long since my best friend Jess and I had let our hair down and went line dancing. I felt giddy. I had excitement in my veins again for once I was living for something other than work. I turned around sipping my wine while holding onto my mama's farmhouse sink, "So, How did you know about Luke and me?"
"Really? Boys talk Dels. That's all Luke has been rambling on to Ben about since you got back." Jess flipped her hair and poured herself a shot of Jack Daniels.
I blushed looking at my wine and smiling, "Really?" I could feel my thighs getting warm just thinking of him. God it was like I was seventeen again.
Jess took her second shot and laughed, "I don't think you understand how in love he is with you Dels. That man is head over heels in love with you. Yea he's made mistakes but who hasn't? He's the top cattle rancher in Montana Dels. He owns half this town and now that you're back so do you."
My eyes darted up to her and my mouth flew open. What did she just say? Was this what he needed to tell me? Was this in my letter from my father? What mistakes did he make what the hell was she talking about? Jess could see my shock so she handed me a shot.
"Calm down Dels. WE ARE HAVING FUN TONIGHT!" Jess yelled and we slammed our shot glasses down on my mama's counter. "Let's go!" She said. "We're meeting them there. They had to take care of some cattle business." Jess put cattle business in air quotes and I giggled at her. She put her arm around me as we told my mama goodbye. We hopped in her truck turned up the radio and flew out of the driveway.
