Back in L.A., the young boy is in the living room. He hasn't looked yet, but he has a feeling that something is going on out there. He sighs, thinking that the fourth is gonna be a little rough this year. He hears his uncle getting out of the room. He hears him going to the bathroom. Then, he hears him talking.

Steve: I don't believe this. Jasmine. Neighbors moving out. Guess they finally got tired of all these quakes.

The boy shakes his head at this. Just then, he comes into the kitchen. He sees his nephew.

Steve: What's up, little Brand?

Brand: Morning, Uncle Steve.

Steven turns on the TV as he puts on his shirt.

TV: Police and the fire departments have asked everyone to stay off the phone.

Steve: Baby, there's something on the news about the quake.

TV: The police are asking us not to call 911.

Then, as Brand comes into the kitchen, the little boy comes back into the house through the doggy door with a toy gun. Steve sees him.

Steve: What's up, man?

Boy: Hey, Steve. Hey, Brand.

Brand: Hey, Dylan.

Steve: What you been doing out there?

Dylan: Shooting the aliens.

Steve: Oh, you shooting aliens, right? You think you tough, huh? What you got? Turn around. Let me see what you got.

He plays with Dylan. Dylan laughs at this. Brand smiles as he laughs too.

Brand: Get him, Dylan. Show him how tough you are. Or do you need help?

Just then, Jasmine comes into the kitchen with the dog.

Jasmine: Come on, Boomer. Let's get you something to eat.

Steve stops playing, and he kisses her. She kisses back, and then he plays with her too.

Jasmine: Oh, now, watch out. Watch it now, baby.

Brand: (Laughs) Kissy face!

Steve: I'll go grab the paper.

Jasmine: Alright.

Steve walks out to go get the newspaper. Brand walks into the living room after getting a glass of milk. He drinks, and sits down. He picks his Blackwater BB shotgun. Dylan then goes outside after his mom makes coffee. She goes outside too. Brand then follows after them. But as soon as he steps outside, his eyes widen in shock as he sees something ahead. He sees the huge alien craft flying over Los Angeles, just outside of the neighborhood. Steve is looking at it too as he puts down the paper. Jasmine talks to him, and as she sees it, she's in shock too. Dylan pops out from behind them, and pretends firing at the craft. Just then, Brand feels his phone ringing in his pocket. He answers it.

Brand: Hello?

Hiller on phone: Brand!

Brand: Dad.

Hiller on phone: Son, where's your uncle?

Brand: He's right here.

Hiller on phone: Let me talk to him.

Brand: (Looks at Steve) Uncle Steve. It's my dad on the phone. He wants to talk to you.

Steve: (Takes the phone) Arnold.

Arnold on phone: Steve! I've been calling, and calling! You have to come in! We're needed.

Steve listens to him as he stays on the phone. Back in New York, David and Jill rush back downstairs, and they come back to the office floor. As they come down to get their bikes, they see the news on the TV. It shows a lot of sightings of alien crafts all over the world.

Newscaster on TV: Pentagon officials are reporting more ships have just arrived over the Capitals of India, England, and Germany, bringing estimates up to anywhere from 10 to 15 of these city-sized spacecraft.

They see they've landed in London, Moscow, and Paris. Jill is watching in shock. This is crazy for the world. Then, they see Marty under his desk, talking to his mom on the phone.

Marty: I know, ma. Just try and stay calm.

David: Tell her to pack up and leave town.

Marty: (Looks at him) Why? What happened?

David: Just do it! (Runs to his office)

Marty: (Crawls out from under desk) Oh, ma. Ma, listen. Get your stuff together and head for Aunt Esther's. Don't argue with me. Just go! (Hangs up, and rushes to the office) David, why did I just send my mother to Atlanta? David. David, talk to me.

David: (Walks out of office with bag) Did you hear me tell you that the signal hidden in the satellite feed is slowly recycling down to extinction?

Marty: Not really.

Jill: (Gets the bikes) He didn't hear that, dad.

David: Countdown. (Walks with her)

Marty: A countdown? (Runs after them) Wait. A countdown to what, David?

David: Uh, it's like in chess: First you strategically position your pieces, then when the timing's right, you strike. (Points at TV) See?

They all look at the TV, it shows the landings all over the earth.

David: They're positioning themselves all over the world using this one signal to synchronize their efforts. In approximately six hours, the signal's going to disappear, and the countdown's going to be over.

Marty: And then what?

David: (Looks at them) Checkmate.

Jill gasps in horror, knowing what that means in the aliens' game of chess.

Marty: (Gasps) Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh! I've got to call my brother. I'd better call my housekeeper. I gotta call my lawyer. Eh, forget my lawyer. (Walks to phone)

Announcer on TV: Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States.

The president comes on TV, and they all look at him as he talks.

President on TV: Good afternoon. My fellow Americans, a historic and unprecedented event has occurred. The question of whether or not we're alone in the universe has been answered. Although it's understandable that many of us feel a sense of hesitation or even fear, we must attempt to reserve judgment...

David: Jill, go outside and wait for me. Ok?

Jill: Ok.

She walks out of the room with her bike. She waves goodbye to Marty. He waves back. She walks through the hall, and gets on her bike. She continues hearing the president talking as she reaches the exit. She stops and waits for her dad. She sighs, and suddenly starts thinking about her mom.

President on TV: My staff and I will remain in the White House as we attempt to establish communication. If you feel compelled to leave these cities, please do so in an orderly fashion.

They both ride out of the building, and make their way to David's father's home. People are all running in a panic, and some are packing up their stuff. This is not orderly. Jill shakes her head, and follows her dad.
