New York City

It's a beautiful day in New York. The Statue of Liberty stands in the sunny day. In Brooklyn from across the river, people are walking while others are playing chess. Music is playing.

Radio: Station WXBY out here in Brooklyn. The Temperature is 95 degrees in Central Park. What it is here in the Borough, God only knows. Let's go to Nick Jones. He'll give us a traffic report at the beaches.

Two men are playing chess together while a teenaged girl is watching. Her name is Jill, and she's watching her father, David, and her grandfather, Julius playing chess. Her father is thinking of a move.

Julius: So why are you waiting? Hmm? My social security will expire, you'll still be sitting there.

David: I'm thinking.

Julius: Yeah, well, think already.

David moves his chess pawn forward. Julius sees this, and moves his pawn in front of it. He drinks coffee from his cup.

David: Do you have any idea how long it takes for those cups to decompose?

Julius: If you don't move soon, I'M gonna start to decompse.

David: Ok. (Moves a castle piece)

Julius: Ah. Ah.

He moves a knight piece to the side. Jill claps at this. Julius then looks at his son.

Julius: Listen, David, I've been meaning to talk with you.

Jill and her father looks at him as he's about to say something.

Julius: It's nice that you and Jill see me so much now, but--

David: Don't--don't start, dad.

Julius: I'm only saying it's been, what, four years? You're still wearing your wedding band?

Jill: Actually, grandpa, it's been three.

Julius: Alright, three, four. Your father's divorced. Come on, move on. This is not healthy.

David: No, this is not healthy. Smoking is not healthy.

Jill: He's right, grandpa. That cigar is gonna kill you one day.

Julius just rolls his eyes as he watches. Then, David moves his queen to strike a pawn, and puts it in front of the king. He looks at his dad.

David: Checkmate.

Jill giggles at this. His father looks at this in disbelief. David gets up, and walks over to his dad.

Julius: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait, wait, wait. This is not-- This is not checkmate.

David: See you tomorrow, pop. (Kisses his head)

Julius: Now, just hold on. This is not checkmate.

Jill: (Gets up, and walks to him) It is, grandpa. Dad won. Well, see you tomorrow, grandpa. Love you.

She kisses his forehead, and walks to her dad. They both get on bikes, and ride off. Jill looks back, and sees her grandfather muttering, and he sees that his son did win. She giggles at this. They both ride back into the city, and they head to her dad's work. It's an office. People are all working hard as they can. They both ride their bikes inside. They ride by people, and a man sees them. He runs after them, and walks beside them.

Man: David. David. What the heck's the point of having a beeper if you're not gonna turn it on?

David: It was turned on. I was ignoring you. Hello. What's the, uh... What's the big emergency?
