Prologue

[Seattle, Washington. Thursday,
December 24, 2037.]

Cat people, commonly referred to as 'nekos', are a unique species that roamed around mankind. They typically exhibit many cat-like qualities and have inherited feline appendages such as the ears and a cat's tail. Their appearance caused an uproar throughout the globe which a mixture of opinions and reactions to match as well.

It didn't take long for the shock to die down to make room for people who shammed the species, having a complete disregard for their emotions. Given this, a large population of the hybrids decided to disguise themselves to blend themselves with the common folk to not arise any commotion, whether it be a positive reaction or negative.

Under a dove grey sky, Y/n L/n pulled her puffy jacket closer to her body and walked away from the establishment she worked at. The path sparkles and crunches, like sugar underfoot, and the coolness makes Y/n nuzzle deeper into the scarf that she donned. Pursing her cold lips together, she cursed for not packing warmer clothes to wear after her shift ended.

As she stopped at a crosswalk, Y/n heard a slight commotion coming from not far behind her.

Looking over her shoulder, Y/n saw no one else around her. Her eyebrows furrowed slightly before spotting a tiny, furry face peeking out from under some garbage, curiously peering over at the young woman. Her facial features softened upon spotting the stray, "Aw... you poor thing." She said, breathlessly. 

Watching the adult come closer to him, the feline began to release a low growl. "Come here," Y/n reached her hand out to try to appear as harmless as humanly possible. This, however, prompted the cat to scratch her as he stood rigid — his tail held out stiff and straight, hissing at her. "Ow!" She groaned and pulled her hand back to see droplets of blood escaping to the surface of her skin.

She took the next few moments staring at the stray. His dark fur is dull and matted, unwashed and bare over the tips of his pronounced shoulder blades. He is malnourished.

"Okay, let's try this then..." Y/n trailed off and pulled out the remains of her lunch that she kept wrapped tightly in her jacket's pocket. She had no lunchbox to put it in, so she had to improvise. She picked off a few pieces of bread from her sandwich and threw them in front of the cat.

Usually, this would have made him respond with an angry swish of his tail, but the feeling of a full stomach was too alluring as the cat slowly moved closer and ate the food. Y/n often talked about wanting a pet to take back with her. She continued to stare at the animal — she was so close that she could easily reach under his chin to scratch it for him.

Pet, the word sounded like cheating when the cat knew she had no idea what he is.

"You could always come home with me if you want." Y/n finally recommended and then the cat paused eating the bread crumbs, looking up at her. He appeared as if he had no protests against the idea. This resulted in Y/n simply laughing to herself, hesitantly reaching down to ruffle the stray's head. "So you can understand me," she moved closer and moved her hand near him, watching with a smile as he pushed his head into her hand, as a way of thanking her for the scraps of food.

Y/n took this opportunity to quickly scoop the stray into her arms. He then proceeded to bite her index finger. The young girl hissed in pain but bit her cheek to prevent a great deal of profanities from spilling outward. The stray twisted and turned in her arms, relentlessly clawing her arms and hands. She was grateful that her arms were at least safe from his attacks due to the velocity of her jacket. However, she found the cat's actions amusing since it was almost as if he was having a temper tantrum.

"You're acting like a child." She said, nonchalantly. The cat then stopped in a sprawled-out position, considering her words, and let out a small sigh before stopping.
